Not counting the comet, some angle of everything else is actually happening..

laurie621 4 points 3 years ago.

Just reading the storyline I was thinking the exact same thing and I haven’t even watched it yet.

loveheart 2 points 21 days ago.

even more now in 2025

irdulili 21 points 3 years ago. 5/5 stars.

Having seen this, I’m now convinced that Leonardo DiCaprio can play anybody. Also, wow. What a scary film. It’s up there with Idiocracy and The Strain in terms of unflinching realism when it comes to how this machine called society works.

expresso 12 points 3 years ago. 5/5 stars.

Also Cate Blanchett, did not even recognize her at first

irdulili 6 points 3 years ago. 5/5 stars.

She’s another master of disguise, like a female Gary Oldman. Did you see the Queen Elizabeth movies?

expresso 4 points 3 years ago. 5/5 stars.

Yes - amazing! I actually have a Gary Oldman playlist already, for exactly the same reason. Time for Cate Blanchett playlist - great idea!

irdulili 6 points 3 years ago. 5/5 stars.

Make sure Thor: Ragnarok is high up on the list. The goth look really works for her. lol

expresso 5 points 3 years ago. 5/5 stars.

Ray187 3 points 3 years ago.

That was Cate Blanchett?

I’m Done! Great movie though.

HeavySmoker 2 points 3 years ago.

I did not even have a clue :)

sloburnjo 12 points 3 years ago.

Quality satire - we are doomed.

blee 12 points 3 years ago.

Cast was all wonderful, end was great. Grim but funny, even if it is depressingly accurate.

KdubZ22 16 points 3 years ago. (Contains Spoilers)

Highly enjoyable movie with a great all-star cast! Although the ending was a bummer…but it did point out how important it is to have leaders who follow facts and science, rather than some lunatic tech billionaire, the type who would save himself and screw the planet! SO glad this was fictional!

Cbptheatre 3 points 3 years ago. 5/5 stars.

Was it though?? LOL

Birdsforme 15 points 3 years ago. 4/5 stars.

I loved the cast and was laughing right along with the film until I was not. Ver good

etim 10 points 3 years ago. 5/5 stars.

GREAT movie—even better ending!

irdulili 4 points 3 years ago. 5/5 stars.

Yeah, I couldn’t help but clap at the ending. So well-played.

suisen 10 points 3 years ago. 3/5 stars.

please look at credits for that extra treat ….yummy little scene ROFLMAO

SparrowsSong 13 points 3 years ago. 3/5 stars.

Pretty close and accurate imagination in my view.

fessologue 9 points 3 years ago. 5/5 stars.

I am at a loss for words to describe this movie, but had to say that it had me go through the whole spectrum of emotions!

Themoo 9 points 3 years ago. 5/5 stars.

Absolutely fantastic! Farcical, satirical, equal parts timely and relevant yet at the same time far fetched - this is one for my forever collection.

citylion 9 points 3 years ago*. (Contains Spoilers)

So this was essentially Idiocracy 2.0 or for this generation. Not bad, not great. I’ll say that it was a fun ride but depressing in the grand scheme of things. The actors I’m sure had a ball getting boat loads of money thrown at themselves making it. Good for them.
I did enjoy the very end as well.
Also I’m behind part of the message of reason. The satire is just so harsh and close to home considering these stupid space races going on. Ironically, the good parts of this film will probably go over a lot of people’s heads.

karim 8 points 3 years ago.

Seems like something that could happen these tiktok days.

Nick8990 8 points 3 years ago.

Had to comment that Mark Rylance is hilarious in this movie. He has such great range as an actor.

Moonbunny 8 points 3 years ago.

This was funny in a very real and dark way

rdmovieman 10 points 3 years ago*.

Not a huge Leonardo DiCaprio fan but this movie turned out to be pretty good. I say pretty good because it’s not good good, but it’s very watchable. It’s a little scary to watch something right now that’s a little close to home, with all of the asteroids and viruses and everything else going on in the world today. Really makes you think that if the world really did have an asteroid in Earth’s trajectory, is this really how the Earth would react. We’ve seen how people react towards other situations with the virus, and racism, and other things. But what would the world be like if we all knew that it was going to end. We really need to come together as a society and start doing something different, otherwise it’s going to end up just like this movie. You need to make the change, don’t make the change come to you.

gattinanero 6 points 3 years ago.

Totally enjoyable comment.

rdmovieman 5 points 3 years ago.

thanks, much appreciated!

expresso 7 points 3 years ago*. 5/5 stars.

Straight to cult classics, this is what will actually happen if there is a NEO in my lifetime

Bloody El 7 points 3 years ago. 5/5 stars.

certainly fits the zeitgeist of today. fun watch, especially the end.

real_deviil 10 points 3 years ago. 5/5 stars.

My 2 cents and social commentary, as per the film:

It was a good movie, but not all films are meant to be enjoyable…I found it terrifying, and that was the intended effect…mission accomplished…

Cautionary tales should be unsettling, and not necessarily “enjoyable”…

It has more depth to it than just a comet destroying earth…peel back the layers, and it is a reflection of reality now…except the real-life comet is not a comet…it’s all the other scary @#$! going on…

The human race (and human history) is so chronically dysfunctional that it’s not that hard to believe something similar could occur…replace the comet with something equally terrifying, and who could say it’s “not” plausible…

Our opinions are not even relevant…the only thing that matters is that it’s entirely possible…

I think most people believe they are a lot smarter than they actually are…you can include me in that group, on more than one occasion…and it is our collective pride that will ultimately be the downfall of our species and our planet…

Even the smartest among us can choose to be willfully ignorant…

I genuinely hope these underlying messages in the movie are heard and understood…

gattinanero 0 points 3 years ago.

You were, it seems you presently remain and are committed to being such in the future. LMBO ._.Geez, obviously Captain.

“what the hell was that? i think its called a brontarock… don’t pet the brontarocks”.what an amazing callback punchline. beyond that, it was so good I’m speechless.

whatmywifedoesntknow 7 points 3 years ago.

Loved this , funny and frightening , I suspect more accurate and entirely more probable than most would like to think

gattinanero 7 points 3 years ago*.

Candide by Voltaire, some Orwell, a dash of Verne plus a bit Asimov and far too many works to list. Humor, drama, human apathy, greed, social conditioning and just plain ole human nature. Plus bonus!! A tiny bit of naughty romance novels with the affair. It is just fantastic . “We must cultivate our garden “- Candide

Alien 4 points 3 years ago.

Wonderful comment, little black cat!

crane 0 points 3 years ago. 1/5 stars.

Wow. VERY insulting to those authors. Like comparing Double Bubble to a Michellin star chef

SheWatches 4 points 3 years ago. 5/5 stars. (Contains Spoilers)

i’m thinking they’ll get all kinds of awards for this one - fitting endingn for the movie

firedove10 4 points 3 years ago. 5/5 stars.

This movie was surprisingly entertaining. It was and sad all at the same time. I also really enjoyed the satire, and how it really made fun of big corporate capitalism. 5/5

Selenity 4 points 3 years ago.

It gave me something to watch, the ending was perfect lol.

HeavySmoker 5 points 3 years ago.

Really Good! Reminds me of Idiocracy :)

Alien 3 points 3 years ago.

Wow, that is an all-star cast.

Honest Review 6 points 3 years ago. 4/5 stars.

This is frustratingly accurate. Profit over everything. Even now we are killing the planet and nothing is being done to stop it… Sad really.

nkx2x 3 points 3 years ago*. 5/5 stars.

i watched it weeks ago but i still think at least once a day: what a great movie! it’s missing the dystopian, apocalyptic catastrophic images of roland emmrich movies but it’s the same intense - maybe even desparate - warning about the consequences of current politics, greed and the fetish of “growth”, “profit”, the brainded fanatic believe in competition - that the biggest player will win, since charles darwin’s “survival of the fittest” has been published in england, first. a market is not based on a competition to become the biggest player, economy is just a tool to handle certain needs of a society not an universal principle. and as all good scifi movies it is also a very strong statement in times of covid-19. this is why we need art especially these days. and this movie is by any means exactly this: a great peace of contemporary art. and it’s kind of broadcasted. so you better take a watch and make the world a better place.

Geogenesis 3 points 3 years ago. 4/5 stars.

That was terrific. The ending was not to my liking and is the only reason this film is not a masterpiece. Other than that, absolutely great.

I really enjoyed that, hilarious film. Highly recommended.

Letmeloveyou 5 points 3 years ago. 2/5 stars.

Not an enjoyable watch. Just a prime example of how those in power try to pull the wool over your eyes.

The rich have a back up plan and then some just in case all things fail.

first Morgan Freeman now Meryl Streep. seems nothing goes right.

I liked it and I loved Leo as always ! He is one hell of a actor and they really captured the emotion of it all. Loved the dark humor and Jonah Hill made me laugh out loud so many times. A great movie 7/10

Griinjah 2 points 3 years ago. 2/5 stars.

Actually, according to the synopsis, she plays the President- not at all a bad gig! ;)

rickdirtysanchez 1 points 3 years ago.

It’s more of a “dark comedy.” Adam McCay is a great comedic writer/director, but the laughs were because it is a very dark subject. I hope the US government doesn’t ever act in this way.

citylion 11 points 3 years ago.

I mean they basically already have with their let’s wait and see reaction in March 2020.

Sorry wrong translation, in Belgium we say ‘waw’ instead of ‘wow’. Thank you for your correction, it was absolutely necessary.

crane -3 points 3 years ago. 1/5 stars.

I can’t believe this movie was by Adam McKay. He is usually funny.
Heavy-handed preaching about climate change verrrrrrrrry thinly veiled as satire, and brought to you by a cast that owns a total of 47 private jets.
NOICE!

Moonbunny 3 points 3 years ago.

It is about climate change but its also heavily satirical about the public being swayed by the media and political climate they identify with. And since it doesn’t specifically address climate change, how exactly is it “heavy-handed preaching?” I find that very funny since your response on climate change is exactly what the very premise of this film is about. Something that is very apparent is being ignored and criticized by the public. People choose to rather criticize everything surrounding it and any kind of media regarding it, rather than take the actual matter seriously. I hope you can find the humour in that as well. Or you can choose to be ignorant about that too…
