When revolutionary Dr. Hari Seldon predicts the impending fall of the Empire, he and a band of loyal followers venture to the far reaches of the galaxy to establish The Foundation in an attempt to rebuild and preserve the future of civilization. Enraged by Hari's claims, the ruling Cleons – a long line of emperor clones – fear their grasp on the galaxy may be weakening as they're forced to reckon with the potential reality of losing their legacy forever.

from someone that never read the books: This show is pretty darn cool! I’m totally flabbergasted at where they left us hanging! (no clue where they’re going to go from here)

Drizzt 7 points 24 days ago.

Mid to sometime end of 25 TILL freakon Foundation 3

xerox 9 points 4 years ago.

I’ve read the book this is based on and I am honestly excited for this series.

sigh 4 points 3 years ago.

Trilogy, isn’t it? I love it.

Kiteguy 3 points 3 years ago.

There was 7 books in the series. Based off of three other series.

sigh 3 points 3 years ago.

Thanks i read all the asimov way too early in my life. robot series first, right?

Kiteguy 2 points 3 years ago.

Start with caves of steel

sigh 3 points 3 years ago.

thanks! i wanna read it all again :D

Kiteguy 2 points 3 years ago.

I know..me too but works out to around 20 books or so.

sigh 19 points 3 years ago.

If anyone wants to know, if you want to read all the books in galaxy chronological order, be warned prelude might have spoilers for the rest after! There can be 15 up to 26. Here’s the list I nerdily compiled:

·End of Eternity (Harlan’s timeline to colonization, optional)
·Complete Robot (anth incl. I, Robot so either is fine)
·Lucky Starr Series (6 books mentions laws of robotics, optional)
·Nemesis (optional)
·Caves of Steel
·Naked Sun
·Robots of Dawn
·Robots and Empire
·Stars, Like Dust (asimov goofed with the order in prelude)
·Currents of Space
·Pebble in the Sky
·Prelude to Foundation
·Forward the Foundation
·Foundation
·Foundation and Empire
·Second Foundation
·Foundation’s Edge
·Foundation and Earth
His friends then wrote with permission of family (not as good but fun)
·Foundations Fear
·Foundation and Chaos
·Foundations Triumph

New to it?
TO AVOID SPOILERS in order of reader discovery you can read the Foundation series:
~ The original Foundation Trilogy
~ Foundation’s Edge
~ Foundation and Earth
~ Prelude to Foundation
~ Forward the Foundation

Researcher 5 points 3 years ago.

Thanks for this list, sigh!
I just “acquired” 7 of the Foundation books on my Kindle…ready to go after I finish the Clive Barker I’m reading now. I used the wiki entry to set the order but after your recommendation as to the “reader discovery” order, I’m changing my reading order.

sigh 4 points 3 years ago.

awesome!

mossryder 3 points 3 years ago. 1/5 stars.

Theres also a weird, unlicensed ‘sequel’ set after all those called Psychohistorical Crisis by Donald Kingsbury, if anyone’s interested.

grasshopper rex 2 points 3 years ago. 5/5 stars.

I highly recommend your abbreviated reading list in that exact order as the 2 prequels (Prelude to Foundation and Forward the Foundation) contain spoilers.

The Second Foundation trilogy (the books written by Benford,Bear and Brin) where very good, actually. All 3 are highly acclaimed authors within their own rights. But yeah, the writing styles of all 3 are different from each other and from Assimov’s so I would recommend reading them after Forward the Foundation if you are left wanting more (even though they fit in at various places during the original trilogy).

sigh 4 points 3 years ago.

Yeah i mean the styles don’t match up and i find that in itself less fun, maybe? the fact that i forgot those particular three books is what i’m basing that on. :D

Researcher 3 points 3 years ago.

I appreciate your seconding sigh’s suggested reading order. Might look into that second trilogy once I’m done with the main items. Thanks.

Joosh-ozzono 6 points 2 months ago*. 5/5 stars.

great show

kyocera301 5 points 1 year ago. 4/5 stars.

I have to say the first couple of episodes were a little slow and meandering, I am so glad I stayed with it because it is outstanding. Although I have read the books and obviously this is straying from them, it is only slightly and thus still offers exceptional storytelling. I just hope that it doesn’t get cancelled because it seems everything I end up liking, gets cancelled.

Shaman 6 points 3 years ago.

I started reading the Foundation-series in 1989 and after reading almost every book linked in with “THE ENCECLOPEDIA GALACTICA” my live was changed completely…. This should be televised!

Drizzt 4 points 24 days ago.

I need a bag full of worm spice !!

Piglet 4 points 1 year ago.

It has been 2 years since season 1 so I’m going to have to watch season 1 one again before I start season 2. I hate it when seasons are spread out and don’t the studios know we’ve slept a hell of a lot and won’t remember what the hell happened in season 1. I think there should be a “cliff note” type video of the first season so we don’t have to spend hours watching the previous season…..😁😏🙃😉

Zolleverin 4 points 3 years ago.

been waiting for almost an year now. Excited its finally here.

Alien 4 points 3 years ago.

T minus 9 days

humanityforward2814 3 points 3 years ago. 5/5 stars.

Alien 3 points 3 years ago*.

😎 Can barely wait.

grasshopper rex 2 points 3 years ago. 5/5 stars.

These last few hours can’t pass quickly enough.

humanityforward2814 3 points 3 years ago. 5/5 stars.

Apples twitter said its getting released a bit early!

humanityforward2814 4 points 3 years ago. 5/5 stars.

I cant wait for this! ITs going to be epic!!

Kiteguy 4 points 3 years ago. (Contains Spoilers)

Seems to be a good series so far. The graphics and effects so far are visually stunning…But. I Pray they pick this up and start following closer to the original series. Not a very good job so far. Changing genders only does an injustice to a great work of literature. Asimov deserves Better considering his view on screen play adaptations.

Yellowbeard 5 points 3 years ago. 5/5 stars.

I will tell you this and say no more: Jared Harris is magnificent at his job. I barely remember the books, they were dense and complex and decades ago for me - but I like this science fiction show and I don’t care that they are not slavishly following Asimov’s words.

w0lfie 5 points 3 years ago*. 4/5 stars.

I first read The Foundation Trilogy in the early ‘60s, which means I’ve waited over 60 years for this!!!
As a matter of interest are, I think 3 more books, but the last one Dr. Asimov wrote(the 4th if memory serves) ties together EVERY ScFi book he ever wrote, including the Robot books.
The last books were written by other authors of note, without digging them out of my cherished library I cannot remember their names

mossryder 4 points 3 years ago. 1/5 stars.

Yeah, the others were prequels and shadow books (Brinn Bear & Benford?). Great books, but they kind of break the series.

sigh 3 points 3 years ago.

Because of how long ago i last read it, i looked up all the things and made a list of reading above. please excuse my nerdiness

sasqua 3 points 3 years ago.

ummm… the early ‘60s weren’t quite 70 years ago, but yeah — long time waiting for this.

w0lfie 2 points 3 years ago. 4/5 stars.

You are quite right, sorry senility got to me, I’m 74 now so I meant about 60 years ago. I think I last read them about 20+ years ago

Alien 1 points 3 years ago.

haha

grasshopper rex 1 points 3 years ago. 5/5 stars.

The Galactic Empire cosmology only included the Empire, Foundation, and Robot books.

greyfur 3 points 3 years ago. 5/5 stars.

Thought there were 3, was one called ‘Foundation and Empire’ was there not? Could be wrong, been a lot of years…

greyfur 2 points 3 years ago. 5/5 stars.

Actually I just looked it up, was Foundation, Foundation & Empire, then Second Foundation, that was the Trilogy. Would post the link, but they don’t let you do that here.

grasshopper rex 3 points 3 years ago. 5/5 stars.

Originally, yes. Almost 30 years later Asimov finally succumbed to pressure from fans and his publisher to add to the trilogy. 4 more books followed, 2 prequals and 2 sequals.

grasshopper rex 6 points 3 years ago. 5/5 stars.

Thought to be “unfilmable”, Apple has created a visually stunning and beautifully told adaptation that may well be able to overcome the one shortcoming of the source material, a lack of character development.

My only complaint is that I won’t be able to binge all of it right now.

Drizzt 3 points 24 days ago.

It was a poke

JoeAgora 3 points 3 years ago.

I read the Foundation and Robot series at least 3 decades ago. Frankly, I don’t remember much about them. I was hoping that watching this show might help. Nope…not a bit. One thing I remember for sure…is that the books were so interesting, I literally could not put them down. I lost a lot of sleep because of that. The pretty wore off the show part way thru episode 1 and it has been downhill ever since. I was hoping for at least interesting and it’s just not. It is dull, slow, uninteresting and awkward. I just don’t care what happens next or how they end it. Episode 3 is the last for me. I hope you find something I could not.

Piglet 4 points 1 year ago.

The second season began filming in Prague in April 2022, according to The Prague Reporter, and fans were finally treated to a sneak peek at the season with a first-look trailer released at the start of this year. The second installment will premiere on Apple TV+ in the summer of 2023.

Alien 3 points 1 year ago.

Awesome. Thanks, Piglet!

kerfy 4 points 3 years ago. 1/5 stars. (Contains Spoilers)

11 minutes in and very disappointing..is this the 4th book or something ? still gonna watch.. just in case it starts to follow the actual books from the trilogy.. at some point.. so far its crap.. or some foundation based rewrite .. I will just pretend I never read the books 15 times or even have a clue as to the story.. might make it bearable.. good visuals, for what ever thats worth..sigh..

gsaint 4 points 5 years ago. (Contains Spoilers)

Storyline

A complex saga of humans scattered on planets throughout the galaxy all living under the rule of the Galactic Empire.

AmieWarren 4 points 3 years ago.

That sounds familiar — like every fantasy space series I’ve ever seen or read.

sanbro5 3 points 3 years ago.

That’s because Asimov did it first and set the bar really high. Arguably, the Foundation trilogy is the best of the genre.

Cinnamin 3 points 3 years ago. 1/5 stars.

Would have been good IF they had actually told the Foundation story. This is just someones reimagined version of the story. It’s so totally off the rails it’s unwatchable to someone who has actually read ALL of the original books.

highlander1911 3 points 3 years ago. 1/5 stars.

I was so very much looking forward to this… Unfortunately, this is so far off the mark that, IMHO, it should never have been titled Foundation. The story lines are so bad it should never have been aired.

Wolfie D 3 points 3 years ago. 1/5 stars.

like a mix mash of Dune & lord of the rings! Not my cuppa tea!

mossryder 5 points 3 years ago. 1/5 stars.

…and the book(s) are absolutely nothing like either.

Streamer 3 points 3 years ago. (Contains Spoilers)

idk i thought the storyline sofar is kinda slow and boring ….suffered thru the first 2 eps hoping it gets better ill give it one more episode b4 i dump this bomb

kahnwiley 7 points 3 years ago.

If you weren’t into the books you probably won’t get into the series. The books were, after all, adaptations of Gibbons’ history “Rise and Fall of the Roman Empire.”
“Foundation” was a series that was big on ideas, not flashy action sequences. It centers on a bookish intellectual main character that invents a new field of study.
Think “Dune” but without any of the battles. If you’re looking for explosions and fights this might not be for you.

bcreed08 4 points 3 years ago.

Feeling the same.

tardisrider 2 points 1 year ago.

can’t wait for s2……

Jarreed 2 points 3 years ago.

starting now on apple+, shouldnt be too much longer

p1mpface 2 points 3 years ago.

at least the last 2 episodes where good

grixit 2 points 3 years ago.

As an earlier poster put it, Psychohistory is dead. Instead, we have key individuals and critical actions and decisive turning points. So much for the Mule being just a blip on the graph.

Frac 2 points 3 years ago.
Werebackbaby 2 points 10 months ago*. 5/5 stars.

Had to vote this a 5/5 to compensate for some of these ridiculous 1/5’s. The show is extremely fun and engaging throughout every episode. There are some glaring plot holes sometimes but for how well done the show is overall, I’ve chosen to ignore those. I’m looking forward to season 3, and also thankful for this site and its users for having shown me, that I haven’t watched everything worth watching.

mss666 2 points 3 years ago.

as a fan of the books watching this is making me sad.

kerfy 1 points 3 years ago. 1/5 stars.

pretty horrible eh.. nothing at all like the books..

etim 8 points 3 years ago. 5/5 stars. (Contains Spoilers)

These kind of shows are a LOT more fun when we quit worrying about how closely they match the books and just enjoy ‘em for what they are, which are very well made and original writings all in themselves.
If all ya want is a rerun of the books, quit complaining and go reread the damned books.

mss666 2 points 3 years ago. (Contains Spoilers)

If they wanted to make just another sci-fi then they should do that but they didn’t they made a show based on the books and then change everything that made the story good. some of the people in the show were only bit players who played a small part then were no longer part of the story, but they are changing them to fill other peoples rolls so they can keep the same actors, which is just spolling the vastness of the story.

grasshopper rex 4 points 3 years ago. 5/5 stars. (Contains Spoilers)

1st, and foremost, Hollywood is in the business of making money. As written it would have been impossible to produce a series that appealed to a broad base of viewers. The books lacked character development, most likely on purpose, and that just doesn’t work for most people watching a TV series. Folks want to be invested in the characters and the only person that was really fleshed out in the books was Hari Seldon. Well, the Mule too, but who could identify with him?

I’ll gladly take what we are getting because this might actually be popular enough that I get several seasons of it as opposed to a single season of a ‘faithful to the book’ version that only appeals to a small base of sci-fi geeks and gets canceled.

kerfy 2 points 3 years ago. 1/5 stars.

good lord have you even read the books..lol

kerfy 2 points 3 years ago. 1/5 stars.

because a bunch of no talent hacks could not come up with an original story ? And instead ruin one of the best sci fi stories ever written to make money off the name ?? lol get a grip

mss666 3 points 3 years ago. (Contains Spoilers)

It’s not that it isn’t like the books, it’s more of what they changed for no reason that i can see. Even them best know quote from the book was said by the wrong person, and the one who should have said the lines just runs off to get a gun at the first sign of trouble.
The whole they are psychic thing is just wrong. yes there are people with abilities but not the one the ones they say have them, they aren’t event ment to know such a thing is possible.
The story is set over 1,000’s of years with different people playing roles if the fall and rise of the empire but they are just going to get the same few people to fill up the rolls that happened 1000’s of years apart.

If they make one of the 2 woman the mule i will just turn off

humanityforward2814 2 points 3 years ago. 5/5 stars.

Disappointed so far in the first 2 episodes. Hopefully they course correct

metalrob72 2 points 3 years ago.

Please don’t suck. Foundation was always said to be “unfilmable” due to the complexities of the story. I don’t believe any filmed version can do the novel justice, but I hope Apple proves me wrong.

kerfy 6 points 3 years ago. 1/5 stars.

it sucks .. big time..

mossryder 6 points 3 years ago. 1/5 stars.

It is bad. Should be “Inspired by…”

Streamer 3 points 3 years ago.

Even though I know it’s all fictional the use of math was anxiety inducing to me. Admirable but cringed at all the faux calculations…

Left_Fail -2 points 3 years ago. 1/5 stars. (Contains Spoilers)

I’m guessing the will turn either Seldon, or Hardin into a diverse strong woman. Maybe both lol.

TooMuchFire 1 points 3 years ago. 5/5 stars.

Having read the series twice, once in 98, which ignited my love for sci-fi to the extreme and more recently. What I love is that nothing is what I expected and I have to say, I’m loving it. Being that its an adaptation, has a newness about it and as much as that old self would like some continuity to the book,I am glad it went this way. New characters, especially empowered female characters take the lead and that is initself one of the reasons I love it. Change is a constant in this life and cant stay in the past forever, time to move onward with the times. Thanks to the uploaders for this epic series.

kerfy 1 points 1 year ago. 1/5 stars.

asimov is probly turning in his grave over this show..

Cap'n Kirk 1 points 1 year ago.

FOUNDATION - Star Wars for the grown ups. I am all the way into S02 E07 and man… not much to be cheerful about. Some neat creatures. NO EWOKS. Bur, even cooler critters. Rebels can’t catch a break. well, not for long anyway. just simply the most brutal place a long long time ago in a galaxy far away.

It’s blatantly obvious Lucas got some of his ideas from Asimov

asclepias 1 points 3 years ago. 5/5 stars.

The world is rich and intriguing. I never read the books so I can’t follow the eras and story arcs jumping around every episode. Maybe they should have done each of these eras as a separate season. Or inter-related shows like the Star Treks. Star Trek, Star Wars, Lord of the Rings, Game of Thrones, all multiple books series like Foundation and they are all very linear. I can’t imagine this approach would have worked for any of those.

tardisrider 1 points 3 years ago.

Excellent..can’t wait for season 2! 9/10 ‘cause nothings ever exactly as you envision it when you read it. Lol

Piglet 1 points 1 year ago.

Season 2 starts next month….finally some new episodes of sci-fi tv shows. I’m getting a wee bit tired of The Brokenwood Mysteries…..haha……

[deleted]
Piglet 1 points 1 year ago.

I will have to watch the last episode of season one before season 2 starts. “Foundation season 2 will officially launch on July 14 – and its new trailer is teasing an epic sci-fi war like those seen in Star Wars and Star Trek.”

grasshopper rex 1 points 3 years ago. 5/5 stars.

I sooo regret having read the spoiler review I just finished. I wish this had been a UK production.
