Set in an alternate America where witches ended their persecution 300 years ago by cutting a deal with the U.S. government to fight for their country, Motherland follows three young women from basic training in combat magic into early deployment at Fort Salem. In this world, the traditional roles of gender and power are flipped with the more dominant women on the front lines fighting looming terrorist threats that are familiar to our world, but with tactics and weapons supernatural.

For those of us who are fans, Freeform put out a teaser yesterday announcing that there will be a season 2. No date yet as far as I can find though.

booger 6 points 5 years ago.

5 Episodes in to this and I find myself looking forward to the next one every time.
Alternate history and What If…? scenarios really get me going.
There might have been some Marvel comics that got me started on this path.

Snoop 3 points 4 years ago. 5/5 stars.

Marvel comics FTW! I find it very interesting how both sides in the show remind me of the Mutants struggles. The Spree is so much like the early Brotherhood, it’s fascinating to see where they’ll go with this in season 2

Themoo 1 points 4 years ago.

And this comment is the reason I’m starting the show now. =)

IAmHaskins 6 points 4 years ago.

I was worried this show wasn’t gonna feature men as wizards/witches in this show but i was wrong on that front which makes this show even better. No point in wasting an opportunity like that. I hope this show picks up another season. I can see this becoming a huge hit if given the chance

blueskies223 6 points 5 years ago.

For women to be important in shows they always have to be young and pretty. Wake me up when there’s a show/story/movie where women are important when they’re middle aged or older - you know, like how men get to be important in shows and movies when they’re middle aged or older. Every woman will become an older woman. This just reminds us that we all get tossed in the trash when we’re no longer something that males like looking at.

Snoop 10 points 4 years ago. 5/5 stars.

Not really sure what you’re on about but the show is an impressive story of female power and sisterhood so you’re missing out for shallow reasons.
There are a lot of older women too so maybe don’t just look at the poster and try the show.

sunshinedaydreamz1 0 points 4 years ago. 1/5 stars.

Shallow? Wow, so wanting older women to be valued as younger women are, is shallow? Nice!!!

Snoop 7 points 4 years ago. 5/5 stars.

Sorry if I offended you, that’s not what I meant. You mention that women have to be young and pretty to be important in shows, I meant you shouldn’t miss out on a show with substance (and important and complex older characters) just because tv is shallow.
Yes the characters on the poster are good looking but their looks are not an important of the show and there is a lot of diversity of looks and age in the cast so you should give it a shot and decide for yoursel

NoelCoyotebleu 0 points 3 years ago.

That IS not a shallow reason! This is a very true reality, that I wish wasn’t. I would like to see older women valued in mainstream shows/films more too, and not just independent or indy films.

Snoop 4 points 3 years ago. 5/5 stars.

My point was we are severely lacking shows (especially geared toward young women) with characters that are complex and diverse.
This show has women of all ages. They are strong, they are layered and whether you consider them pretty or not, they are not exploited for their looks or showed off to be attractive. That’s not the point of the show and it’s a pity to miss out on it just because the three cast members on the posters happen to be young and pretty.

Dismissing women for being attractive is about as bad as discarding them if they are not.

savonius 2 points 3 years ago.

Did you know that over 2/3 of the U.S. military is under 30?
If the writers are true to form, they would indeed cast these characters as younger. You have to be between the ages of 18 and 26 to enter military service, so even if you went the full 20 years, you’d be no older than 46 at retirement, even if you came in at 26.

I don’t think they’re dissing the middle aged here, the military is a majority-young service, even if you’re a witch.

bcreed08 4 points 3 years ago. (Contains Spoilers)

You’re really critiquing the lack a realism in a show where all people identified as witches are drafted into a Witch Army. smh

SJ Robert 1 points 3 years ago.

Retire after 20 years??

PacificLilly 2 points 3 years ago. 5/5 stars.

YAY! June 22nd, 2021!!!! Only about 3 weeks before this series is back for Season 2!! WooHoo! I really liked season 1 of this show. I found it to be pretty interesting. I mean there really aren’t any truly “new” or perfectly unique shows or movies anymore. But being able to take a subject that’s been done a million times before and change it just enough to where it’s (for the most part) a new story that’s interesting and engaging, is flipping awesome! And I don’t only just like this show bc the writers made it just enough different from others in the genre… I like it because the writing is good, the characters have depth and have grown on me, the acting is decent, the music is seriously fantastic and bc the storylines have the possibility of evolving (which I’m very excited to see where they go!) It’s been a pretty fun and enjoyable ride into their unique world, thus far, and I’m excited to dive on in further to see what happens next! :-) June 22nd everybody! Yippee!

The basic idea of the witches working for the US instead of being executed is a good one but unfortunately is ruined by the obvious SJW tone. All the men are portrayed as weak idiots and all the women are powerful. It could have been a great show if they had avoided that bias and instead stuck to just doing an alternate reality of the original premise, but the need to rewrite history to fit the feminist agenda ruined it. The show conveniently leaves out the fact that over a quarter of the “witches” executed at the Salem witch trials were men…

Snoop 4 points 4 years ago. 5/5 stars. (Contains Spoilers)

Nope. The show doesn’t leave it out at all. There are warlocks in the show and none of the men are portrayed as weak or idiotic. It’s just a show about a matriarchy but considering your other posts, I’m not shocked you jumped to the party line conclusion. Being scared by powerful women is not something that can be cured easily sadly.

I managed four episodes before the left wing feminist clap trap got too much. Like most things a good concept got ruined by a political agenda.

Snoop 4 points 4 years ago. 5/5 stars. (Contains Spoilers)

I actually don’t remember anyone using political talk in the show. You’re the one bringing in your political agenda in this, bro

whatmywifedoesntknow -3 points 4 years ago*. 1/5 stars.

BORING , CLICHE AND VERY BADLY WRITTEN . The writer of this show describes himself as “queer” and it shows, infact it couldnt be more obvious. I’m all for shows with strong female leads but this one tries to hard and fails everywhere . A bunch of very annoying little girls playing at army so much so that the main plot thread is almost forgotten as it is pushed to the back at every turn . not a single interesting character . Legacies and Roswell as flawed as they are , far more interesting and definately with better production , very dissapointing , could and should have been so much better

Snoop 3 points 4 years ago. 5/5 stars.

Besides the obvious homophobia, you don’t say much to argue your opinions about the show. Guess a show about strong women is not for every man.

tardisrider 1 points 2 years ago.

wow season 3 took an interesting turn, influenced a little by the man in the high castle i think….

CandiceBlake13 1 points 3 years ago. 5/5 stars.

Renewed for a third season!!
So happy, it’s only getting better and better.
Shame the third one will be the last season.

Jcramsay1 1 points 3 years ago.

Ok. I think I will give it a go for a few episodes.

Well today is supposed to be the release date for the new season or so I am told from my search just now. couple dates actually, depending on what you want to believe, another one is the 25th. I’m actually hoping it comes out today.

I have another site I check often is kind of a calendar for shows, keeps pretty up to date, and that also said that it would air tonight, so got my digits crossed for it to air tonight. One can only hope….

grasshopper rex 0 points 2 years ago.

I’m slipping. Didn’t realize that season 3 had started.
