The Great is a satirical, comedic drama about the rise of Catherine the Great from outsider to the longest reigning female ruler in Russia's history. A fictionalized, fun and anachronistic story of an idealistic, romantic young girl, who arrives in Russia for an arranged marriage to the mercurial Emperor Peter. Hoping for love and sunshine, she finds instead a dangerous, depraved, backward world that she resolves to change. All she has to do is kill her husband, beat the church, baffle the military and get the court onside. A very modern story about the past which encompasses the many roles she played over her lifetime as lover, teacher, ruler, friend, and fighter. |

This show is funny and that is coming from someone who doesn’t think anything is funny! Its par excellence script and performances keep you glued to all the action. The production is expensive and luxurious. The serious moments are quite serious and I cried at one point because, while it seems all fun and games and sexysexy in life at court, the actors are invested in making their characters real and deep (again great writing).
Elle Fanning has turned into a fantastic actress. I can’t fault a single thing in this production. It’s one of my faves!

When it came out i did’t want to watch it cause it seems lame to me. But with the strikes in hollywood, i thougt i give it a go… And a absolutely LOVE it. Everything about it. Great acting, great story, great dialogs great visuals… It absolutely is The Great…

really good show but why are there africans in 18th century russian, let alone in the emperors court and african nobles. does any body know about Catherine the great?
If I remember correctly the say in the first ep that they are not shooting for 100% accuracy
This show sucks, it is not funny at all, unless you like people cussing nonstop and saying rude things all the time…
