2/5 I’m not sure why this was made. It viewed as a revisit for fan-service, but who thought the original needed a revisit? It was always to be a standalone…we didn’t need a followup to see what happened in a blatantly inaccurate period piece. Don’t get me wrong, I consider Gladiator to be one of my favorite films, not for accuracy, but for the scope, the beauty, the acting, the sound/music, the well executed/edited story. 24 years later, it holds it’s own as art…and this new one is but a shadow of it, which is curious considering the money thrown at it. I don’t think the performances were that bad, maybe some casting issues, but a weak story, and what seems like a movie that was edited down to fit a time limit some executive demanded. Worth a watch for some of the fight sequences, but on the whole, it kinda tarnishes the name of the original.

Dear me. Ridley’s best is most definitely behind him. How can a film so expensive be so flat, soulless, and predictable? It’s not a terrible film. It’s just utterly boring and unengaging.
Absolutely zero effort or imagination went into the plot of this film. If ever there was a movie made ‘just for the money’…this is it. I am both shocked and appalled.

The story is pretty much identical, and the characters are too similar, and far too many flashbacks & quotes from the original. Only none of it is done as well. None of it grabs you. It’s lazy and repetitive. Paul Mescal is no Russell Crowe however much he tries, he doesn’t have the presence, the character, the gravitas, the experience, or the depth. This time we are given 2 twin insane emperors, The fight scenes are OTT and too much CGI, You may think that Denzel would save this mess, but eventually he gives up and just starts camping it up as the insane panto villain. Save your money & time, and avoid this disaster.

Gladiator was not based on a “real life”. It just fuses together various recorded incidents spread out over 600 years, and ascribed these to one fictional character.
It’s not in any way, shape or form, historically accurate.
I wasn’t talking about the story I was talking about the “sport” itself which was a real life thing and as a result of that is having a gladiator riding a rhino whilst it is a cool image nobody’s going to ever deney that it’s also something that is unrealistic as those characters would be more focused on just trying to survive until the end of the fight and not trying to do something cool.
I get your point about the gladiator rhino rider but, I suspect the rider had no say in the matter. That my friend is what makes life interesting. Diversity is the spice of life. I can enjoy a type of movie you might hate or have a meh feeling about and we still, based on your name, like other types movies like say vampire movies, more specifically Hellsing type vamp movies. I tend do shy away from most horror but, still love a good vampire flick.
Oh yeah one hundred percent agree but at the same time you have to draw the line somewhere and while this might be a good film the trailer doesn’t do it’s job of making the film look all that good but to each there own I suppose.
This movie was a lot better than the trailer had put it off to be. But I will be honest. It was not as good as the first one. But it was worth the watch. It kept me entertained! (See what I did there? Lol, sorry I had to.) 3/5 stars from me.
Oh man showing the coliseums could be flooded to have full on naval battles, was enough to get me excited! I was always blown away when they figured out the romans could do such a thing! Freaking amazing!! Really really hope this isn’t just a microwaved turd and actually slays! Thumbs crossed!
I am editing my comment. Joseph Quinn is in A Quiet Place: Day One, and he looked so familiar but has not been in a lot of movies/tv shows yet. But he is in Gladiator 2 and I will be looking forward to watching him in this movie. One of Russell Crowe’s best-known films, Gladiator, is getting a sequel. Since Crowe’s character died at the end of the first film, Paul Mescal (Oscar-nominated for his role in Aftersun) will play the adult version of Lucious from the original film, who finds himself fighting in the same arena as his father. Denzel Washington and Pedro Pascal are among the film’s other stars.
So bad even Denzel Washington sucked in this movie! Never thought I’d say that about DW. Dame Judy Dench’s cameo role in which she donned man drag to play a senator couldn’t save this dumpster fire.

Talk about Rome loving the blood, guts and gore of the arena …. people these days are just as guilty for watching it on TV and in films. Don’t get me wrong, I enjoy a good violent movie now and again especially one with a decent hero, but this movie was crap. It had a very weak story line and barely held my attention. The movie makers and shakers tried to capitalize of the first one but failed miserably.
Why was this made? This is discount Gladiator and thats being generous. Very poor script and very wooden acting. Even the action scenes are not very well shot. Ridley Scott was my favourate Director for a very long time. However as mentioned by another member he is long past his best.
I remember not seeing the movie ready player one well after it was common conversation especially among gamers wtih its gamer theme. I remember a buddy challenging my silly strange reasoning or perhaps lack of sound reasoning as to why i didn’t want to see it or wasn’t excited about it. He simply asked me how many bad steven spielburg movies have you seen? Some directors are simply so quality or established or rather have such strong records of above the average you really just have to give them a try purely on their overall success rate. Good or not im sure there will be some worthwhile aspects.
I think sometimes when you have incredible names on a thing until they age out where they are purely rubber stamped in for fake recognition you gotta have a little faith and just leap when masters of cinema come calling. Frankly ive watced far too much of this period and general theme lately so i hope its a nice long wait for the actual HD release cause im going to need the 3 or 4 months to forget about just how much rome excess i have viewed recently.
I really, really wanted to like this because I am a fan of not just Ridley Scott, but also Paul Mascal, Pedro Pascal and Denzel Washington. I tried, but it was overly self indulgent and actually silly at times. Perhaps it’s the CAM vs DVD issue, so I will try again. Thanks for the links!
It very well could be. Everything is edited (fact). I just found the entire story pretentious and disengaging. It’s only my opinion, and I’m delighted others enjoyed it. That’s what movies are for. 😊
Ok, watched the TS version and it is not bad quality at all. The movie itself is mildly entertaining and if you have a couple of hours to kill, it’s not that big of a deal. The plot is thin and repetitive and acting is stiff and predictable, but again, if you have time to kill, it’s not that bad of a watch. It is not even close to the original but not a total waste of time.
I think this movie was fine for what it was. Denzel did an excellent job, his performance really stood out. The plot was a bit loose, but I liked it. I don’t understand all the hate around it. It’s definitely not the best movie ever, but I had fun.
the hate is my friend that this was supposedly the follow up after all these years to the 1st movie and what they did was just copy the same plot as the 1st movie so basically no on in Hollywood has any imagination anymore…they did the same with the new Beverly Hills cop…and a few other movies….absolute crap and they wonder why people dont go cinema anymore..oh actually let me change that only ijits go and pay extortionate prices to watch crap

wasn’t impressed by the music cutting off instantly and not just fading out it was very off putting.
I thought it would never end. 2 stars only because there was some pretty gratuitous violence.

Just because you can cast Denzel doesn’t mean you should cast Denzel. This movie was really, really bad and DW didn’t even try to save it.
