Show is just another CW trash.

Rob Apples 3 points 3 years ago.

Say no more sir. CW is all it took to make my decision.

v8nlw 8 points 3 years ago.

This is not a remake of the original in any way. It’s really a soft fun option for teens I would say. The view of American Chinese family life is nice and has a fun side to it.

I don’t know the previous TV show, and I don’t know what all the reviewers in this comment section are in a huff about. So purely as a neutral review of this TV show, I’d say it’s pretty good. The acting is catering to a younger audience for sure, but it’s not badly written or made at all. I’m happy with it and would watch more.

I just looked up the trailer for Warrior on youtube upon the recommendations of a few comments below, and you can clearly see that it’s made for an entirely different audience. If you’re a fan of Warrior I’d say it’s unlikely you’ll like Kung Fu, and vice versa.

HeavySmoker 2 points 3 years ago.

you dont know original kung-fu? hahaha -David Carridine was the best! GrassHopper

Dominus 1 points 3 years ago.

That’s right “WeedHopper” as from Mad Magazine.

Snoop 5 points 3 years ago.

It’s terribly cheesy and aimed at teenage girls, well it’s CW, but it’s no better nor worse than the 70ies show with Carradine, which in itself is a problem since they didn’t know any better in the 70ies but should by now.
If you’re looking for less cheese and more substance with good acting and action, check out Warrior instead.

A lot of negatives here….but I really enjoy the show and look forward to more. 5 episodes in and all the crap being said shows all the closed racist minds now a days. Watch don’t watch make up your own mind.

If you’ve never seen the original Kung Fu, do yourself a favor and check it out. I was mesmerized by it as a kid and it was my first glimpse into eastern thought. Carridine was excellent and there were many very young actors who went on to become famous…Jodie Foster, William Shatner and many more. It is still probably my favorite show of all time so I’m sure this one won’t even compare but I will give it a try.

Caterwaul 2 points 3 years ago. (Contains Spoilers)

The villain only has one sword, needs 8 according to the stories. SOOOO 8 more episodes like this one. Exactly like this one…Hmmm

vandebosch 2 points 3 years ago. 1/5 stars.

On IMDB 900 people voted it 4.6/10 at the moment. Kung Fu (1972) with David Carradine scores much higher, i’m gonna check that series.

rapscallion 2 points 3 years ago.

I so hope the CW hasn’t ruined one of the favorite shows from my childhood. I’m even willing to accept the recasting of the lead as female if it’s done right.

ac1d 3 points 3 years ago.

CW has (no surprise there) and no its not done right imo

tapwater 0 points 3 years ago.

The original was horrible, and this sounds like it’ll be worse. Appropriation of culture at it’s finest. Is it a coincidence that this is debuting now?

Quote from an article interviewing the ‘star’:

“It feels really empowering to get to reclaim [martial arts] and to say you know what, it’s not a stereotype. It’s something that we can be really proud of because it’s a huge part of [Asian] culture,” Liang says. That this is also the first American martial arts show to be written by an Asian woman and to focus on an Asian American family is not lost on Liang.

Snoop 3 points 3 years ago.

They can’t put a show together in a month so yeah it is.
However it’s just what it sounds like. White dudes trying to be relevant by making shows about Asian Americans.
Watch Warrior instead.

tapwater 1 points 3 years ago.

They can easily change release dates.

Jhigh03 0 points 3 years ago. 5/5 stars.

Actually picked up for season three also, I cant believe it

Snoop 3 points 3 years ago.

Best news I have read in a long time! For once a good show getting canceled is saved!

Alien 1 points 3 years ago.

I say, yes, it’s a coincidence.

Aggr69 0 points 3 years ago. 1/5 stars.

Disappointing remake of Kungfu and has all your stereotypes involved. If you want to want kung fu (which should have been bruce lee but they wanted a white man and stole it from him) go watch that one. It at least has real kung fu in it. Not the Hollywood version of kung fu. 1/5

SJ Robert 3 points 3 years ago*.

It wasn’t “stolen” from Bruce Lee. That’s a myth. Lee promoted a series that also had a Kung Fu artist traveling through the west, kicking butt. But that character wasn’t a monk, encouraging peace. Lee’s show was titled, The Warrior. The concept of the half-white Shaolin Monk coming to the U.S. west as a peaceful person was proposed years earlier by Ed Spielman in 1967. Lee auditioned for the role of Kwai Chang Caine but didn’t have the personality of a monk and his accent was too strong for the leading character. Also, the U.S. market in 1972 wasn’t “ready” for an Asian lead actor. Others, like George Takei and Mako also auditioned. Takei was the President of an Asian actors group and protested, but to no avail. But at least the show’s success created lots of work for the Asian acting community, more than any other show. There’s no way it would have succeeded with Bruce Lee in the leading role. His English wasn’t good, American audience was too white, and he had anything but a calm monk-like nature. It wasn’t stolen from him. Also, when Hollywood instead offered to make The Warrior with him separately, he wanted to wait and see how successful his latest full-length movies was. When it became successful, he declined the offer to make The Warrior - not wanting to be a TV actor when he could be a movie star instead.
