Paolo, a skilled mechanic in a modler’s factory in Italy, defends his friend Brocco, when the latter is discharged and incurs the foreman’s enmity. The treacherous Brocco steals an empty six-pound shell, which Paolo treasures as a relic of the war, and makes a bomb, with which he wrecks the modler’s factory. A piece of the bomb which bears Paola’s name is found and on this evidence the innocent man is sent to prison for five years. When Paolo is liberated he has a lodged hatred for the law and takes his two children to America, where he secures work as a stevedore and establishes a comfortable home. Federal authorities are advised that opium is being smuggled into the section where Paolo resides, and through peculiar circumstances, the Italian becomes the unwitting tool of the crooks. Anxious to accommodate the clever rascals who have cunningly won the friendship of his children, Paolo innocently meets one of the smuggler’s accomplices and carries a package of the contraband goods to the rendezvous. When the smugglers are arrested and brought to justice it appears that Paolo is hopelessly implicated, but the Federal officers establish the fact that he is innocent. Full of gratitude, the Italian develops a wholesome respect for the laws of his new country and takes an oath of allegiance to the United States. |
