A short film in which the viewer is forced to enter the first-person perception of someone with autism. Narrative is experiential, and largely informed by the filmmaker’s relationship with his autistic brother. In portraying someone with autism (and editing a short in which the staccato, overwhelming-sensory-input of his brother’s reality is the narrative stimulus) Andrew Michael seeks to shed new light on the discourse of autism. By showing us a distorted, trance-like realm of autism consciousness similar to that of his brother, he captures autism not as a discourse, but as a full-bodied happening. This short is the first in a series of films based on Andrew Michael’s play ‘Autistics in America: An Autist E-Pic in Three Amer-Ican Dreams’ (self-published May 2013). |
