Fantastic movie. We’ve been dicking around with the concept of War on US soil with Zombie Apocalypse and Super-heroes for years… But what if we don’t have any monsters or heroes?
Because the movie refuses to take current political sides, it really emphasizes that the real enemy is the guy(s) at the top that won’t relinquish power, and the people/corpos that support them.
POV journalists is really brilliant, forcing the audience to just ‘objectively see’ how destructive and stupid such a divide can be.
‘Divide and conquer’ is a real thing
Exactly but most people are in smart enough to figure that out these are Machiavellian techniques that have worked throughout the centuries. Some would argue that even God in the Bible used Machiavellian techniques but that’s a whole nother story and no I’m not a Christian I mean it’s in my name LOL
i blame it on the dam eclips ! just saying ‘’!
This movie has caused a Civil War in my brain…. and I don’t really know which side I’m on. On the one hand, it’s a beautiful, searing and poignant drama that asks very hard questions about what modern America is and who we are as a people. On the other hand… it doesn’t attempt to answer those questions, outright pulls it’s punches, and leaves me wanting a lot more meat on the bone.
The cinematography, direction, acting, sound design, set pieces and action sequences are all absolutely phenomenal. 10 out of 10. But the story… it leaves me wanting so much more. I LOVE a great character study, but I feel the broader story/world-building and even the characters themselves needed much more fleshing out. This would have made for an absolutely fantastic mini-series in the same vein as ‘Chernobyl’, but as a movie, I’m not sure it hits like it should. Even so, I was 100% on-board throughout the entire movie, but the last two minutes didn’t sit right with me for reasons I can’t fully explain. Also, Nick Offerman and Jesse Plemons are CRIMINALLY underused. Overall, it’s a 3.5/5, but I’m rating it 4/5.
This looks great from the trailers. Love Garland’s movies. He’s such a master storyteller. I’ve enjoyed everything I’ve seen from him. His movies are trippy AF too which I love since they usually mess w/your perception of what is going on in the movie.
What’s so Civil about War anyway?- Guns ‘n’ Roses…This movie looks trippy as. But California and Texas in an alliance??!! Naahh bro.
I can not wait to see how they explain that one.
Weirder things have happened like a reality star becoming president for a term!
Yes I am in total agreement that would never happen.
reading all the comments , makes me wonder how no one especially someone from the us , hasn’t mentioned this there trying to keep it out the media but covid kicked it into play yes California and Texas have had enough of the government that they want to pull away and separate all together, and now we have a movie, reminds me of all the other movies people watch and take no notice of the hidden messages, i remember when terminator first came out, everyone was laughing and joking , roll on 40 yrs and we have androids that look like humans, humans will never learn
Ahhhh, now that makes sense to a Kiwi like me- California and Texas unifying over their mutual dislike of the Federal Government.
Robot barristas and guac making robots. One CEO said recently said on the Daily Show, after firing 90% of his workforce and replacing it with AI “It’s only a problem if you feel like a human”…??!!!
This. The only way Cali would ever ally with Texas is if the CA coast and central valley separated into 2 states. Then the new state of Inland Empire might ally with Texas, but the feds would have to have been worse than even Trumpian autocrats for that to happen. I don’t think the federal government’s ever been that effective in its current form, it’s far more likely to be paralyzed by division into total ineptitude.
100%
Going to give this a shot because Garland is directing it. He does amazing work! Thanks for commenting on it Rex.
This was a fantastic movie…. so many layers. Utterly terrifying, yet it told the story in a way that I have not see before. War is not cool. Under any circumstances. I wasn’t expecting to love this, but I didn’t miss a minute of it and will tell everyone it should be compulsory viewing. Don’t think it has been promoted correctly. Considering all that is happening in the world right now… this is incredible.
So you liked it, Grass? I’ll check it out then. You seem to have similar tastes to my own.
Yeah: damage junkies.
So many of these negative reviews are basically:
“I wanted to watch p0rn but this is just a movie about people having sex!”
But in the end, I don’t see what they’re complaining about. You couldn’t ask for a better money shot.
This movie was way better then I thought it was going to be. I would say watch it if you are in arms about it. If anything it’s a great popcorn flick to relax to.
Loved the ending.
Watched this last night and still annoyed today by how bad it was. Little context, thin plot. The audio was bad but it probably wouldn’t have helped if I had heard everything. I foolish little girl wants to be a photojournalist…in the middle of a war….and she’s allowed to tag along. Would have been interesting to know how the U.S military was over-thrown.
Like a warm, flat beer. No real storyline. Definitely felt like screen writing. Not impressed. 2/5✨
There are many great movies that are solely character driven. Just because you don’t care for it doesn’t mean it’s not good to others. I love Garland’s movies & he tends to focus on developing his characters because humans are ultimately fascinating subjects.
This was in the trailer so not a spoiler but the line “ Yeah but what ‘kind’ of American are you?” was chilling and so on the nose to what our polarised world is like today. 5/5
Civil War had just a hint of reality in it with things that I’ve heard mentioned on social media. Dystopian/possibility? Hard to tell these days just how far our government might go according to conspiracy theorists anyway. I liked the way it was filmed, the topic was interesting without leading you to conclusion. I mean, you couldn’t really guess what was going to happen and it was original. I liked it more than I thought I would.
God only gives you so long on this rock we call Earth. I chose to spend 1 hour and 48 minutes watching this. I chose poorly. “The Day After” meets “Road Trip” meets “Jericho” meets “Are We There Yet?”
The only bright spot is I didn’t pay to see it.
Wow, what a let down, with all the hype about this film. This movie could have been so much more, but hey that’s Hollywood these days, no imagination, no passion just bland background noise. 1.5 out of 5
Coming to you live September 2024.
Terrible Movie. It was all about journalist.
Meh, more drama than action/adventure/thriller. Idk really what i was expecting but this wasn’t it.
This might happen if the government keeps on messing up our system of freedom and protection because the government don’t want to actually do anything about the border and getting us killed plus the government keeps on with their bullcrap taxes going up well I’m not a subject like we were when we broke away from England or Britain whatever
seems to me,some of the “progressive” US-media/movie society are wishing such an outcome,if their candidate isnt winning…
at least all the “victims” of the government ticked all the boxes
Wait how is this out already lol.
any “side-market” like somewhere in asia already test-deployed
Half way to what we will actually be in soon. OK movie but needs a little more thought in the character area. 3.5/5
My Daddy recommended this movie to me on Sunday night so I’m finally giving a go. So far it looks fantastic. I just hope it doesn’t come to fruition like the move Contagion did
This has got to be one of the worst movies I’ve seen this year! If I had to score it, I would give it a 1/5. If you’re a fan of apocalyptic movies, and end of the world scenarios, Then you’re barking up the wrong tree. I’ve been waiting for so long to watch this, but I ended up being so disappointed with the lack of a story, and the horrible acting. The Movie jumps right in to the action, or should I say the lack of action. There really wasn’t a great plot to follow, and the whole movie was pretty much about a few journalists trying to make it across a few states without getting killed. The whole movie was just lacking any kind of a story, It could have been a great movie, but this one fell hard and never got back up.
Alex Garland’s worst so far. Disappointing.
