New York City, 1900: The Knickerbocker Hospital is home to groundbreaking surgeons, nurses and staff who push the boundaries of medicine in a time of astonishingly high mortality rates and zero antibiotics. The newly appointed leader of the surgery staff is the brilliant, arrogant renegade Dr. John Thackery, whose addiction to cocaine and opium is trumped only by his ambition for medical discovery and renown among his peers. Into the all-white staff and patient hospital comes the equally gifted Harvard graduate Dr. Algernon Edwards, who must fight for respect while trying to navigate the racially charged city. Trying to maintain its reputation for quality care while realizing a profit, the Knickerbocker makes an effort to attract wealthy clientele, while literally struggling to keep the lights on. |

“In September 2020, Soderbergh confirmed that a new season of The Knick is in development led by Barry Jenkins and André Holland, who would return as his character Dr. Algernon C. Edwards, and that original creators Jack Amiel and Michael Begler have written a pilot episode” - via The Knick’s Wikipedia page
I hope it comes to fruition because it is a good drama and not many medical dramas have been made during this time period. It is interesting to see how medical procedures were done and how some procedures were developed. I had no idea that cocaine was once used in liquid form.
All I am concern with is….CLIVE OWEN going to be in it, and when will it be aired?
No, there is no way he could be in it as you know if you watched it…it will be focused on Dr. Thackeray’s African-American assistant, Dr. Algernon C. Edwards who is played by André Holland. The new series will be co-directed by Barry Jenkins, who just did “The Underground Railroad”, and Steven Soderbergh will produce again. I can’t wait. As far as when, it’s in development, and a pilot episode has been written.
bummer , but thank you for info!
I wouldn’t get my hopes up for it. The show didn’t do that well, and it cost alot to produce. The pilot episode for the reboot of the show has been around for abit and it doesnt seem like its going anywhere HBOs just been sitting on it according the the interviews I have read. And if it does, It doesnt sound like it’ll resemble this show at all anyways. Sodenbergh wont have anything to do with it besides just a name as a producer.
I enjoyed this so much and was completely heart broken that it did not return for another season
Same here!!!
Same!
so underrated!!!
Really enjoyed this. Shame it was canceled. I did see somewhere that they were thinking about doing a 3rd season. Or are in the process of a season 3. Here’s to hoping! Would recommend it to a friend. 8 out of 10
Agreed. Writing and acting was amazing. Shows like this get dropped and the Alienist hangs around, because those characters are more foregiveable. They’re more palatable. These characters are too flawed and real, and unlike Deadwood and some others of this caliber, it’s very very dark. I’m a nerd and as a child I had very old relatives who lived at the turn of the century. I think a lot about what the world was like before technology so I can’t get enough.
I had to stop watching the Alienist due to the killing of babies/children. Way too dark for my taste! I, too, was upset that it was canceled and Clive Owen was spot on as the lead character!
The Knick deserved a third and more seasons.Hopefully it returns again
It’s unfortunate they ended this excellent series. The storyline of a genius, caring, but drug addicted doctor… this was top notch.
way too smart , too sophisticated ,too morally ambiguous and too stylish for this to ever last on American TV ……… wort it for the soundtrack alone ! genius !
In 2020, word was that a reboot/third season was in the works. Soderberg was developing the new season/series along with director Barry Jenkins and André Holland, who played Dr. Algernon Edwards in the original series. Since then, though, not much has be heard about this new take on “The Knick,” which is often a sign that things are kaput. But it seems like this project is still alive! Indeed, according to André Holland, “The Knick” season 3 will definitely happen. At some point. Holland revealed that he and Barry Jenkins “talked a couple of nights ago [about the new season] and he’s still in lockstep with creating a season 3.
Excellent in every way: writing, direction, acting, etc. Should never have been cancelled.
I so agree with you and it was interesting to see how medicine and hospitals operated and evolved in the early part of the 20th century to the advances of the later part of the 20th century on into the 21st century. Liquid cocaine…..yet it was used in Coca-cola……the soft drink that is still popular today!
So sick gotta rewatch, it’s like the 1900’s version of “the Pitt” lol (more the other way around but ya)
why was this canceled? I found it to be sooo good!
