I have been very impressed with Tobias Menzies in this series thus far. He has the American accent down pat even though he is British. He has become a very good actor and any character that is thrown at him, he does it well. I didn’t like his character in Outlander but he played the character very well. A lot of young actors in this series, and it shows but there are seasoned actors that make up for the fledglings.
This first episode was excellent, the soundtrack is outstanding as well. great quote “This is America. We replace our Presidents with elections, not with coups.”
Not familiar with actors but sounds interesting and will put it on my list.
If you like Anthony Boyle from The Masters of the Air, he will be in this new drama series. Boyle’s character in MOA he is Lt. Harry Crosby, he plots out the flight plans for the pilots. The series also stars Tobias Menzies in a powerful turn as Edwin Stanton, Secretary of War, who led the manhunt for Booth in April 1865. Hamish Linklater (The Big Short) morphs into the president, Abraham Lincoln, and Lovie Simone (Greenleaf), Will Harrison (Daisy Jones & The Six), and Patton Oswalt (A.P. Bio) are among the all-star cast. First 2 episodes air Friday the 15th.
Thank you, I didn’t even know this series was happening. I really enjoyed it, did you?
Well, there isn’t any recording of Lincoln’s voice that I’m aware of, and I didn’t care for the person playing Lincoln’s. Kind of made him look and sound a bit simple minded. I know for realism, and to convey how slaves were talked to and treated was rather shocking to hear. I found myself gasping with disgust. Menzies is great in this series and a totally different character than the character he portrayed in Outlander. He seems to take on each character he has played with gusto. I must admit I’ve not read that much about the assassination of Lincoln and the days leading up to and the days after. I didn’t know he lingered on for hours after being shot. And of course there is the saying that I’ve heard for years but didn’t know why until about 30 years ago. “You’re name is mud” which refers to the Samuel Mudd, the doctor who set Booths broken leg, he was labeled as a traitor. So when someone calls you mud, it’s not a good thing. Roger Mudd (CBS reporter until his death in 2021 at the age of 93) was a collateral descendant of Samuel Mudd (meaning he descended from another branch within the same extensive family tree). I may continue on and give it a few more episodes.
Lincoln is almost always portrayed with a thin, reedy high pitched voice because there are written historical sources (books, newspapers, private letters) that describe it that way.
Precisely. Written “historical” accounts. Not sound bites, which didn’t even exist.
I thought that was the case because Daniel Day Lewis used the same kind of voice. But the actor portraying him looked to young for the part in this mini series.
Dont forget Harry Mudd from the OG Star Trek!! :)
There aren’t any “sound recordings” of George Washington, or King Henry either, but this is what acting is about…. it’s about acting, even if it’s historical [in context].
What? No, DDL did NOT look, or even closely resemble Lincoln. Lincoln was called “ugly” in many, many written accountings, and DDL did not appear ugly at all. However, DDL is an excellent actor (or was, as he is formally retired). Further, how do you know what his accent would have been? Accents in the US are quite diverse and regional, not generic at all. If you read historically accurate documents they all agree, he was a healthy middle-aged man with warts on his face, thin and ugly and a blueish colouring. Whatever that means, is subjective, therefore an adaptation is not based on anything that was recorded by video or voice, but by written OPINION only. Further, there is only “speculation” that he had a form of mercury poisoning (he took mercury tablets) which coloured his countenance, but did not make him frail or elderly (he was assassinated at 56, in good health).
…”There are 130 known photographs of Lincoln…”

With all due respect, that’s a Wiki link. It’s not accurate, but still very intriguing (on a base level) and hopefully others will look into it further. Thanks! x
