Mark Daly (latterly known for BBC Panorama) documents the story behind the salvation of the last great Scottish shipyards. Written by John Charles Brownlie, directed by Ewan King and featuring rare interviews with the late politician and activist Jimmy Reid, Clyde Built was commended in the Royal Television Society Awards. By the late 1950s, Scottish shipyards were faced with huge competition from overseas. The British Government responded by creating Upper Clyde Shipbuilders (UCS) in 1968 with 8500 workers in five yards. In 1971 UCS went into receivership and was refused a government loan. The unions, led by Jimmy Reid and Jimmy Airlie, organised a work-in to complete the orders in place. There were mass demonstrations and world-wide support for the campaign. The provost of Clydebank famously said: ‘The government were trying to do what the Germans had failed to do in the war’. In February 1972, the Heath Government caved in and retained two yards, currently run by BAE Systems: Yarrow at Scotstoun and Fairfield’s at Govan. Both focus on building today’s technologically advanced warships. In Clydebank, the 800-tonne Titan crane still stands today as a monument to the many great liners and warships it once helped to fit out. |
