Vanaprastha is the story of an older American man who takes a trip to the Peruvian Andes to escape the stresses and hardships of working life. His reflections of the trip and personal theories on nature, escapism and health are told in a powerful monologue over images of impossible snow capped peaks and deep lush valleys. The man’s theories appropriately mirror the duties of the third Hindu stage of life, ‘Vanaprastha’, where the man’s responsibilities as a father are over and his attention is turned towards becoming one with nature before he experiences death.
