Over the last two years Mickael has invested everything he owns into ‘Highlight’, his first feature film. Aaron (Jack-of-all-trades) and Stefano (a well-connected freelancer) have also backed the dream by putting their own money into Mickael’s film, and equally losing their fair share of weight in the process… With both hungry to progress in commercial features, Mickael has somehow persuaded them they can sell “Highlight” in just ten days at the biggest festival there is, Cannes. ‘If I dream of a building, it’s the tallest in the world. I don’t do average, I do big.’ - Mickael Amongst the Ang Lee’s, Martin Scorsese’s and Lars Von Trier’s, Mickael has managed to get a screening booked at the world-famous Palais. The three friends now have just one week to convince seventy buyers to attend and pick up “Highlight”. But they’ve never sold a single feature film before - let alone at Cannes. ‘It helps saying the name of Elisa Lasowski, people suddenly focus on you’ - Stefano Tarantino has Brad Pitt, but Mickael has his own star in Elisa Lasowski. A rising talent fresh from Shane Meadows’ acclaimed “Somers Town”, Elisa is en route to Cannes promoting it’s French release and the guys hope their film can ride the same wave as they court journalists, producers and big-wig investors. A chance encounter with “Talking Movies” host Tom Brook, who shoots down the potential of a “Highlight” sale, bursts lifelong fan Aaron’s normally positive bubble. Stefano grows preoccupied as he realizes this is not the investment to get him further into the film business.. Mickael remains unmoved though, all the while becoming more and more seduced by the flashing lights of La Croisette. A three-way-split - completely unforeseeable five days ago - now looks likely. and the reality of going home without a penny looks the only done-deal. A reversal of fortune suddenly appears when the film’s composer Gregoire finally arrives with the movie’s master print. The team is now getting face-time with the industry doorkeepers. The VIP party invites and champagne meetings are also coming their way; and the guys begin to see their dream as tangible again. Even Stefano has time to let his hair down and rock it out with cult Heavy Metal band Anvil . When a Dutch distributor invites the whole team onto his yacht to discuss a European release and suddenly, the night before the screening, all of Mickael’s dreams are on the brink of realization. Could he have been right all along? Have their endeavors finally paid off? |
