Dream City is an experimental documentary set in present day Iraqi Kurdistan. It follows a day in the life, fantasy and memory of Diana, a young Iraqi woman yearning for escape. It is Newroz, the Kurdish new year, a holiday which coincides with the Spring equinox. Normally Newroz is a festive time, full of dancing, music, flowers and bonfires. Not this year, 2015. ISIS killed 3 peshmerga, Kurdish soldiers, in honor of the holiday. Everyone is in mourning. The nation is again at war. The optimism of previous years has faded into a deep-set weariness, the effects are visible at every turn. Unfolding over the course of one day, we become trapped with Diana in her home. The power goes out before lunchtime. Diana spends most of the day in bed or on her phone. Her mother cleans the house. This stillness is interrupted by visual excursions to the hopes, fears and memories of more vibrant times. 16mm footage and scenes filmed outside the house blend with Diana’s internal dialogue, the reality of her former life and dreams negated by the confines of her home. |
