In an urban loft nestled in a city center, theatre actress Natalie’s morning begins like any other - lying in bed with her puppy, Molly. She quickly drops kibble into her pup’s bowl and, realizing she’s running late for rehearsal, hustles out the door with barely a glance behind her. Molly patiently waits for her mom to return. The next morning, Natalie receives a call from work that rehearsal for her show, A Gentleman’s Companion, has been canceled for the week due to a virus. At first, the news comes as an opportunity to develop her craft - but as weeks turn to months, and theaters around the country begin to shutter their doors, her situation turns dire. Sleepless nights and constant anxiety plague her, coupled with feelings of intense fear and grief. On a day in gray midwinter Natalie departs to meet Juliet, her old high school friend and first in-person meeting since it began. As she commutes there, she travels through a world altered by the pandemic. When Natalie meets Juliet at a park, her friend oozes energy and success, sharing news of a promotion at work and purchasing a new home. As Natalie excuses herself, she leaves feeling despondent, drained and worthless. Approaching the street, she finds herself feeling indifferent to her indifference - she’s tired of trying, tired of hoping, tired of fighting. She wants it to end. Taking a step forward into traffic, she closes her eyes and braces for the inevitable. |
