In 1944, tough, elegant, Lula, is eight months pregnant and living alone. Her husband, Zygmunt, has been working for the Polish resistance army fighting against the Nazi regime. When Zygmunt returns home, he is spotted by a Nazi supporter who reveals his location to German officials stationed at the town’s borders. A warning spreads that the Germans are entering the town to look for him. Lula’s and Zygmunt’s sweet reunion quickly turns into a tense fight for survival. With so little time to run, Lula insists on hiding Zygmunt and facing the German soldiers alone. Lula lies about Zygmunt’s whereabouts but the menacing German officer does not believe her. He drags her outside and asks an older, more aloof German soldier to keep an eye on her while they search the house. The tension is palpable as Lula awaits the fate of herself and her family. Unexpectedly, Friedrich begins to confides in Lula that he knows they will find her husband warns they will show no mercy to her. He offers her a chance to escape. Lula then has to make an impossible choice - to abandon her husband or fight for her child’s future.
