Salem's Lot (2024)

It’s not great. Anything that isn’t heavily reliant on jump scares and sets an atmosphere is a big plus. It’s been about a year since I saw the original last, and a lot of people are wearing some heavy rose tinted glasses, yet the original does do a better job of building to the big events. The outright horror of the original was muted, even for the day, so this didn’t have a lot to live up to. (King’s writings are always going to be better if you can get past his incredibly slow starts to 95% of his books) This movie does have great make up, the fledgings look good with a couple of exceptions and the CG on their eyes was well done for the most part. That said, they over relied on it for the big bad. When are they going to learn? When your big bad doesn’t seem tangible, it kills a horror movie every single time. Practical is cheaper, faster and looks better 99% of the time. The scene that was in every trailer, where the MC gets swooped up in front of the church, is a prime example - it should’ve been done with wire work and come from the side. The shot they used belonged more in a spoof, like Scary Movie. I’m going to rewatch the original later, but right now I’d give it a draw as neither are ever going to be a memorable vamprire movie.
