In 1738, Pierre Gaultier de La Vérendrye became the first European to set foot on the banks of the Red and Assiniboine rivers. He was tasked with finding a route to the Western Sea and forging alliances with the Natives, both to aid in his explorations and to divert valuable furs from the British posts on the Hudson’s Bay. |
