An atmospheric experimental documentary, In The Forest is a film about Epping Forest, an ancient woodland that stretches across East London. Emphasising the material form of the Super 8mm format, the film relfects upon the way nature makes us, as well as the way we make nature, and present a visual essay aoubt our political and social relationship to forests as spaces that form identity and social change. The forest is not shown as a place of strange mystery, but as a place of humankind’s violence and domination. The film’s starting point was the attempt by the current British government to sell-off and privatise Britain’s forests, an issue which galvanised massive opposition and forced a policy U-turn. |
