Near Bremen in April, 1945, just before the end of the war, a young, injured German soldier is almost killed by a Jewish-American GI. During the altercation, they exchange information and discover that ten years earlier, when they both lived on the same street in Berlin, they were best of friends. While reminiscing, the American is shot in the stomach and death is imminent. As a gesture to his friend, the American insists they exchange identities. The German can go to America and start a new life with the family of his friend. Suddenly a grenade is thrown into the room and in an act of selfless devotion, the dying American smothers the grenade with his body to save his friend’s life. |
