The almost 17 minute final cut tells the story of a young recruit Private Alex Maxwell played by Robert Cumming reporting to his first assignment with the Earth Defense Force engaged in fighting the Biodroid threat. Upon his arrival he is given his combat boots that had been previously owned by a casualty of war. Maxwell is immediately introduced to the bleak existence of the soldiers of the resistance. Dark humor surrounds his transition from FNG (F*ing New Guy) to a member of the squad. His first encounter is with the people who will become his brothers in arms is the unit’s medic - Doc Sampson played Brian Ciach. After being introduced to his squad the young Maxwell trained as a “tech’’ - a soldier responsible for maintaining electronic equipment and gathering data on the Biodroids- is sent on his first patrol. The mission is to recover the beacon that the humans have set up to maintain contact with survivors of the Apocalypse who have fled to the far reaches of space. Upon his introduction Maxwell is introduced to Rico- (Roger Herrera), Templeton (Rick Schmelz). Maxwell not even settled into his new home is briefed by his commander (Kristy Brannon) that they will be heading out to rescue another unit and take over guard duty of the beacon. Traversing the post apocalyptic wasteland the unit encounters and defeats the first of two threats on the journey. Following a brief firefight Maxwell approaches the remains of a Biodroid and sets off an unexploded improvised device. The squad members are immediately frustrated by Maxwell’s lack of care when approaching the dangerous enemy even one that has been destroyed. The squad moves on and encounters the second and more challenging enemy on their mission. After an intense gun battle Templeton calls for a drone strike that destroys the enemy. The team being guided by the battle hardened Sergeant Thomas (Eric Croas) moves through the destruction and finally accomplishes the mission. Upon the rescue of the sole survivor of the lost squad and keeper of the beacon Lieutenant Welsh (Jay Welin) Maxwell is given the beacon. Once in possession of the beacon Maxwell examines it to ensure it still functions and is broadcasting the distress signal in the hopes that it will reach the humans who are in deep space. |
