In the not-so-distant future, during the winter of the next Great Depression, a mysterious young woman claiming to be engaged in a spiritual war confesses to several murders to a pair of jaded world-weary detectives. She claims her victims’ souls were contaminated. They needed to be purged and cleansed of evil in order that they may be returned to a more noble state. Before dismissing the story as the melodramatic workings of a psychotic mind, the detectives ask the young woman to show them where the bodies of her victims are located. She agrees and takes them to Irving Wood, a desolate forest with an ignoble history and a century’s worth of dark secrets. It is there among the twisted limbs and spiny thickets that cinderdrift begins…
