Heel’d tells the story of the Philadelphia organization, Hand2Paw, which brings together homeless youth and homeless animals. Hand2Paw’s programs are made possible by establishing a partnership between social service agencies serving homeless youth, and shelters serving homeless animals. Jerome Maynard is a homeless, 21 year-old Covenant House youth participating in the Hand2Paw program. Since attending Hand2Paw’s weekly sessions bringing Covenant House residents in the Pennsylvania SPCA’s shelter, Jerome has been able to acquire an internship that had led to a full-time job. Hand2Paw works to create positive change in the lives of both the homeless youth and homeless animals it brings together, and has the potential to be implemented in cities across the country with large populations of homeless youth and homeless animals.
