In 2006, a crisis erupted in East Timor that caused thousands of people to flee the city for safe refuge. The violence claimed the lives of many Timorese citizens and left widespread destruction in its wake. News of the crisis spreads around the world. When it reaches a young Timorese student she is immediately consumed with worry, frustration, fear and anger about the on going violence happening in her country. Cut off from family, she is left feeling hopeless as she thinks about the distance that separates her from her family. From Hawaii, she expresses her feelings of sadness to her family, believing that she will never see them again. She extends her love to her country and people through a written letter entitled, “Letter To My Mom.” |
