Poetry Slam, a subcultural entertainment, first appeared in Chicago in the 1980s, and has since been a stimulus to poetry the world over. Judges are chosen from the audience to rate the poems. Each poet has a time limit of three minutes. One of the stars of the genre is Staceyann Chin, born in Jamaica and living in New York.
