Details:

Makalani Jones, an Austin musician, struggles to make ends meet as an eclectic trumpet player in a Mariachi band which has been in the family for three generations. Except he’s not at all Hispanic, he’s Black. Austin has no shortage of musicians but many of these artists have other full or part-time jobs to pay the bills and support their hobby. Makalani on the other hand is a full-time musician who has a newborn child that he is trying to support. A recent Huston-Tillotson University graduate, he has played with musical greats such as Wynton Marsalis, performed classical music at recitals, and plays as the centerpiece of his band dubbed ‘The Makalani Movement.’ Makalani talks about multiculturalism and the history of different cultures blending.
