When the Civil War ends, Hazel realizes that David, her life long love, and she can unite in marriage with a marriage license, previously denied African American slaves prior to the Civil War ending. In a medical field hospital, the tired and wounded soldiers of the Confederate Army are tended to by family members and nurses. One one side of the field is Anna, a Caucasian woman, tending to her fiancé, Charles, a Confederate soldier, who lies near death. On the other side of the field, on the grass, lies David, an African American porter, who was wounded carrying supplies for the Confederate Army. When Charles dies before he can complete his wedding vows to Anna, Anna learns to heal her emotional wound by giving to another person in her same place. Anna reaches out to Hazel, giving her a way to be married to David before it is too late. Ultimately, both women are united in sorrow, sharing the deep bond with men they loved. |
