Jim Reynolds worked in the village brickyard. Jim loved Mabel Whitaker very much, but Mabel gave her affection to Bob Warren. One day Jim saw Bob go into a saloon. He remonstrated and Bob advised him to mind his own business. The following day, in the brickyard Bob hauled a flask from his pocket. Jim took it from him. Bob picked up a brick and heaved it. Jim got hit on the side of his head and for days was missed at his work. Jim saw much of Mabel and Mabel’s faith in Bob waned in proportion as she grew to love Jim. A day came when the boys caught Bob. They were treating him roughly when Jim interfered and bid them leave Bob alone. They left and Mabel came. Bob, who had thought Jim dead, was so overcome as to offer his hand. For reply Jim stooped, picked up another brick and handed it to him with a look at Mabel, saying, “Hit me again, Bob, and maybe she’ll marry me.”
