The single mother Corinne (52) and her daughter Savannah (16) have a bond that goes beyond the average parent-child relationship. Both suffer Ehlers-Danlos syndrome, a hereditary disease in which the patient does not create connective tissue, bones and tendons are stretched out of place continually. Corinne can hardly walk and is rarely out of the house. Savannah is, for now, relatively little affected by the disease and helps her mum out in the household. However, the mental ballast for this teenager is heavier than the physical. At 50 square meters they try to find a way to cope with each other and with their fate. Corinne feels guilty and has great difficulty to accept that she slowly loses her independence and parental role. Savannah in turn struggles with puberty, the household that is getting further out of hand and the vital questions about her future. But the chaos in the household, the immobile joints and even the narcotic painkillers don’t let their spirits down. ‘Savannah and her mum’ is an observation of a special relationship between parent and child with the ups and downs of everyday life. Despite their worries, they find strength in each other and themselves through humor and unconditional love. |
