According to the ancient Greek Mythology in Hesiod’s Theogony, in the beginning, there was only Chaos. As the creation of the world is one of the oldest and most important topics, the perpetual Chaos is often vividly depicted through a plethora of paintings, sculptures or drawings, as the infinite space, the void or the darkness of the underworld. Within its bowels emerge the personification of the night, the Goddess Nyx, and Erebus, the pure and absolute darkness, as well as their offspring Aether or air and Hemera or day who are the complete opposites of their parents. Ultimately, Gaia, Tartarus and Eros too emerged, while mother Gaia gave birth to Uranus, Ourea, Pontus and Oceanus, all fundamental components or primaeval gods which together, they form one functioning system with Uranus as the supreme ruler, being above everything. |
