Holy crap! Where the hell did Dark City come from? Where the hell has it been hiding? I don’t think I ever heard of it before last week when I stumbled upon a recommendation from the Critical Drinker. It’s the Matrix…a year before the Matrix…but SO MUCH BETTER! Better style. Better acting. Better script…and WAY better directing. I am blown away. So much for my 2 decades long belief that the Matrix was original. Nope. Dark City is the original. Don’t get me wrong…the Matrix was a very interesting and entertaining movie…but where the Matrix was shiny veneer…Dark City was the soul. For sure if I had seen Dark City before the Matrix, my impression of the Matrix would have been significantly more subdued. To coin a cliché…If you liked the Matrix…you will LOVE Dark City.

I’d never heard of this either and I thought I’d seen all things Keifer. Glad you posted this!

Skynet -2 points 3 years ago.

The Matrix original? So original Plato, Socrates and Descartes were philosophizing about the topics in the movie 2300+ years ago.

JoeAgora 4 points 3 years ago.

I don’t recall hearing of movies by Plato, Socrates and Descartes. There isn’t a concept created in the last thousand years…that hasn’t been repeated and/or stolen from people thousands of years before that.

Filmguy 4 points 3 years ago.

Interesting, I thought i missed a good movie, but never thought of this as Matrix. Guess, focused more on the Aliens, than the system. Matrix i thought how the tech humans built took over. But yeah, now can make the connections. There is a classic DocWho Episode that screams Matrix, among others, but…

Looks just as good as any scfi movie out nowadays, if not better than most….Enjoy

I was sure I’d seen this before but I couldn’t remember anything about it

Hah! Funny.

SJ Robert 4 points 4 years ago. 5/5 stars.

I believe there is a Director’s cut that’s even better.

etim 3 points 3 years ago.

Some of these are 1:45, others are 1:52 so the director’s cut may be in the mix. The DC doesn’t have the narration at the beginning.

Tevan1102 4 points 4 years ago. 4/5 stars.

This was a good movie. I gave it 4/5 stars. Loved it

The matrix always reminded me of this movie. this is old but still an 8.5

muhammed wally 5 points 3 years ago.

waaay under the radar when released. If you don’t get titillated by the horror of consensual reality unraveling in style (not top 40’s style), this heady chunk of fiction will fall flat and appear to appeal to noir comic book cliches. Being more art than film, it will always fall short of mainstream success, which is why it is so good. No pandering to the preppy majority.

xerox 5 points 4 years ago. 5/5 stars.

This movie, released before the matrix is the matrix only better.

SJ Robert 8 points 4 years ago. 5/5 stars.

I saw this in a theater as a double-feature, opening for The Matrix. Needless to say it was the best double-feature I’ve ever seen. Both completely blew my mind. The Matrix is, of course, a popular classic now. Dark City is an underground/cult classic. Both are easy 5/5.

cloroxbleach 6 points 4 years ago.

Whoa, that’s awesome. The only thing that could be better is if you got to see it at a drive-in (or maybe I just really like those idk)

ChibiFan7 4 points 4 years ago.

SJ Robert that sounds like a dope ass time dude! i would of loved to have been there :)

Great, movie: Better than most!

Trent 3 points 3 years ago.

Now you need to watch (The city of lost children.)

augusts1 2 points 3 years ago.

I love that movie! It’s so dark (literally & figuratively),strange & fascinating. Jeunet is a brilliant filmmaker, creating amazing worlds in his movies. No one knows that film & everyone fawns over Amelie which is great too but TCOLC is great in its own right.

kyocera301 2 points 1 year ago. 5/5 stars.

This, the Matrix and The 13th Floor are my go to movies when I want to think that I’m not in Kansas any more. Excellent movie 5/5

Caterwaul -6 points 4 years ago. 3/5 stars.

Boring, really Boring. One of those were you keep waiting for something to happen but it disappoints. Like part of a story book you found and that’s it.
