What are you on about? Cast a Deadly Spell is made first, therefore the original. And then came With Hunt, which is the sequel to Cast a Deadly Spell. Read underneath comment lifted from wikipedia. It’s not a remake.
A sequel entitled Witch Hunt was released in 1994, with Dennis Hopper playing Ward’s role of Harry Philips Lovecraft. (The character’s name, as well as a number of plot elements, make reference to the work of weird fiction writer Howard Philips Lovecraft.)
And like I said, Cast a Deadly Spell is superior in any way. Lovecraftian to the bone!

I’m curious as to why you would have expected a “horror story”? The genres are correct here: Crime - Mystery - Fantasy. If the expectation is a horror story, then that’s the problem, because this film never aspired to be that.
If the title didn’t give it away, and the penny didn’t drop in the first 30 seconds of the film, you need to learn to look both ways before crossing the street. ;-P
