In 1944 Vienna, young army captain Carl Szokoll gets involved with Count Stauffenberg’s conspiracy to assassinate Hitler. Szokoll must assume command of the Replacement Army to get Vienna under control when Hitler is dead. When the assassination attempt fails, Stauffenberg is executed, but Szokoll remains undiscovered and is even promoted to Major. The next year, the Soviet army is moving closer to Vienna, and it is only a matter of days before they reach the city; Hitler’s orders are to completely destroy the city before the Soviets reach it. Szokoll and a few fellow conspirators feverishly try to avert the city’s destruction. Using some of the old orders left over from the 1944 plot, they intend to get part of the Wehrmacht troops in Vienna under their control and arrange a peaceful surrender of the city to the Soviets. Private Käs is sent to negotiate with the Soviets, when a traitor almost thwarts the plan - This semi-documentary is based on the actual events of July 1944 through June 1945. |
