Mike Tyson is 16 ½ years old and lives with his unbearable mother Cynthia in Faintville, a small nowhere town in the wilds of Northern Canada. His greatest wish is to be dead. His life doesn’t have anything in it that would make the rest worth living. One afternoon, Mike digs out an old hunting rifle that his dad left behind and shoots himself in the head. The next day he wakes up - not in heaven but in the local hospital. Mike is disappointed. But before long, doctors find a large, malignant tumor growing in his brain, which cheers him up immediately. He keeps his diagnosis a secret to avoid a life-saving operation. With death a certainly, Mike’s outlook on life changes. He realizes his mother is only human and his rediscovered dad isn’t the hero he always thought he was. But more importantly, he meets 22-year-old Miranda House and falls hopelessly in love - without really knowing what love is. Suddenly, Mike isn’t so sure he wants to die anymore. But getting rid of death is easier said than done. Mike learns that life may be risky, but it’s the only game in town. Coconut Her is tragic comedy caught in a struggle between life and death - with victims on both sides. |
