A young Daniel Santos seems on the verge of a crossover, singing with an international orchestra in a 1940s Manhattan luxury hotel. Cut to the present (1982), and we find him operating a humble bodega in Ocala, Florida, and preparing a biography with Secre, a young journalist he has recruited as press secretary. The memory of past glories makes him embark on one presumably last adventure: a tour of South America where he was known as El Jefe (The Chief) and where he hopes to be again acclaimed and applauded. Upon reaching the Tour’s first city, Daniel’s expectations are radically thwarted by the simultaneous appearance of Marcela (Isel Rodríguez), a merengue superstar and Daniel’s resentful ex-lover -and the actual Tour headliner, Daniel downgraded to her opening act-, and Miguel-Miguel (Obie Bermúdez), Marcela’s producer and surging Romantic Salsa singer. The resulting mishmash opens ancient wounds, unleashes ego, gender, and generational conflicts, and makes Daniel confront the inescapable passage of time and the possibilities of oblivion, all with a hopeful, emotional finale. |
