A story of cosmic terror about The Gardners, a family who moves to a remote farmstead in rural New England to escape the hustle of the 21st century. They are busy adapting to their new life when a meteorite crashes into their front yard. The mysterious aerolite seems to melt into the earth, infecting both the land and the properties of space-time with a strange, otherworldly color. Got to love cosmic horror. So creative. And it’s HP Lovecraft… so major points there. I really enjoyed this film. It was dark, pink, and twisted. I wasn’t expecting it to end the way it did. 5/5

Boy, that was painful. ANYTHING with Nicolas cage is painful, to begin with. Many things bothered me about this movie. Mainly the dialogue between the characters. It didn’t make sense, most of the time. There was no chemistry between cast-members. And Nicky C., it only got things worse. The lack of urgency from these people was dismal. I was shaking my head at times. Most of the time, these people are just standing around, gaping at one another. Those kids are absolutely useless. Behaviors are weird, there are many plotholes, etc. There was a story somewhere in this mess. But it got lost. And, at no time, did I feel spooked or creeped out. I expected something interesting, but I got a bad acid trip instead. I’ll stick to the original, H.P. Lovecraft.

“Color Out of Space” is produced by Spectrevision (Elijah Wood is Creative Director), who also produced the visceral “Mandy” with Nic Cage. It is a high-end, Lovecraftian-based film which feels like a cross-between “Annihilation” and “The Thing”. It is loosely based on the short story by the same name by H.P. Lovecraft. The changes to the movie are extremely well done and fitting of a Lovecraft themed film. The cast is remarkably cohesive in their overall hysteria and strangeness which makes the acting top-notch. Cage is as weird in this one as he was in “Mandy”. It is NOT a film for those who do not like the in your face, disturbing visuals that Lovecraft is known for. Highly recommended for Lovecraft aficionados.
Freaky. I like these kind of movies. Got a little intense there for a minute too. It started out pretty good and held on to the momentum and I wouldn’t say it was “edge of your seat” stuff but it was a good movie. Enjoy!
Finally got a chance to sit down and watch this one.
My thoughts on it are mixed…it was fairly decent. It wasn’t awful or bad (and let’s face it Nicholas Cage has been in some REALLY bad films in the past) but it wasn’t great either.
It’s “based on an HP Lovecraft story”…and I thought it was basically a mix of The Thing meets Life meets Annihilation.
So, all in all? I would say it’s worth a watch if and when you have some time for it.
I expected more. Mandy was a tour de force this was straight to video barely above NF quality fluff. I was lookign forward to a Lovecraft movie done right as this had been advertised but besides a few nice practical effects the movies not worth the time. They could have edited the first 34 minutes and it might have been more watchable. 2.5/5
