Details:

The Logic of the Birds was filmed in the West Bank of Palestine and uses a 12th century Sufi poem to reflect on ideas around landscape, freedom of movement, walking and collective gatherings. The Jordan Valley, where the film was shot, is on one of the most important trajectories for bird migration in the world as well as being on a route inscribed by numerous journeys of historical pilgrimage, exile and return. The poem, Manteq al Tayr (or The Logic of the Birds, by Farid ud-Din Attar) describes a spiritual migration of birds who set out on a journey in search of a leader but who after crossing extremely difficult terrain finally reach the awareness that as a collective group they already embody the necessary leadership qualities. Working with young local actors and making a reading of extracts from the poem in the seemingly but never empty landscape the artist wanted to offer one of many possible scenarios that could re-activate past narratives hidden in the land and open up a space for a potential future story yet to be written.
