Details:

Even though the term Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder has become commonplace, so much misinformation and misunderstanding overshadows the real impact of PTSD on veterans, their families, and the surrounding community. The film Invisible Scars: Hope for Warriors with Hidden Wounds explores the history of combat stress in order to properly contextualize PTSD within the larger framework of war history and psychology. Through interviews with veterans, families, military experts, historians, counselors, politicians, and doctors, Invisible Scars dispels the myths in order to present real hope for treatment and recovery. Through the bond and shared experience of service, veterans candidly share their stories of war stress and the impact of PTSD in their lives. The culture of the military and the necessities of training warriors demand that service members learn to not feel pain, always stay on guard, and push emotion to the background. But, as Invisible Scars reveals, when veterans reintegrate into the home front, they often face difficulties reintegrating and coping with the emotional and psychological wounds suffered on the battlefield. Because the experiences are so difficult, most service members are uncomfortable or simply unable to express what they feel internally. However, that very camaraderie of the shared, sacred experience can be the motivation many vets need to seek help for themselves. Because families don’t know what the service member has been through, they too find themselves at a loss on how to cope and how to help. Therefore, they also need to understand what PTSD is and how to respond. This film is an avenue for veterans and their families to discuss their experiences and for communities to work together to heal from the wounds of war.
