Since the birth of photography liberated painting from articulating a representational symbol of the world we have seen an explosion in the creation and appreciation of static visual language. This has not been expressed as fully in the world of the moving image. Film has been constrained by it’s photographic basis and animation by it’s speed of production. Digital media has made the photographic frame as plastic as the painted canvas and the animated frame elastic enough to be open to endless experimentation in a reasonable time. This plasticity allows for imagery to be used in a very emotionally resonant fashion, in many ways like music. |
