The Acolyte (2024)

Now that it’s finally concluded, I’m no less disappointed than I was after the first episode. They stretched 3 episodes worth of content over 8 episodes. There is some good to be found, but to be blunt, the creatives behind this show are incompetent. There were already existing characters in-universe to to scratch the itch they were aiming for that they could have built upon. That way they would have had an established outline they could have fleshed out and polished.

Most of the medias defenses of this show just don’t hold water. The one that irritates me the most is crying that they didn’t have enough time to tell a coherent story in just 8 episodes. They were incapable of filling out the episodes they had, losing about 3 episodes worth of runtime for shows in this format due to their VERY short episodes. On top of that, more than half of what was put into the show should have been left on the cutting room floor. Ideally, this should have been cut down to a 2 episode mini-series with a 90min runtime for each episode, akin to Sherlock. The sad part is, a couple of these actors did a very good job even literally making something out of nothing as the showrunner admitted, and this is going to hurt their careers. The people whose careers deserve to be damaged, if not destroyed, by this show are the creatives behind the scenes. In the state this story is in today, this never should have been filmed and, frankly, it never should have even been cast. The story doesn’t even have a coherent outline. There was no chanced of creating an episodic adventure when you don’t have a tangible starting and end point for the season, let alone a concept of where to go as a series.
