Anyone remember Bill Shatner writes books? This forgotten series of 18 episodes is adapted from his popular TekWar stuff.

Way back when, I used to read a ton of Star Trek paperbacks, and there are a crapload of them, and from a lot of authors. It would take a lifetime to read them all at this point, but there are a few authors that are really, really good, and truth be told, I have to say that Shatner is at the top of the list in my opinion. He has written several of them that are really quite good. If you like reading any of the Trek books, you might want to look up some of his work, can probably get them via inter library loan.

There are a lot of fav Trek books, but Shatner’s stuff that he wrote concerning Kirk is very good. Those were done with a lot of respect & were every bit as good as something like Spock’s World or the DC Fontana stuff. Actually anything of Shatner’s we read were from Inter-Library loan. Those came from Albuquerque.

He had a ghost writer for the TekWar books and even so they weren’t that good. Think TJ Hooker in space.

Yeah, that was no secret. He never hid that he used an author to work out his concepts. My brother had all that stuff, and we read all of it. Everything from Asimov to Adams, Conan to Elfstones, Jordan to Clarke, he had it. From great to so-so.

Growing up I considered myself a bit of a science fiction snob (ironic in that science fiction itself wasn’t generally considered a serious literary art form) and that meant I had to read Dragonriders of Pern and Thomes Covenant the Unbeliever on the sly. I’m still waiting for those 2 series to get a film treatment.

Oh yeah The Dragonriders would be groovy. My brother had that too. Around here we like McCaffrey, Terry Brooks & Jordan a lot as well as the super hard stuff like PK Dick.

When I was younger, really never thought about being a science fiction “fan” since I was surrounded by it as well as all the AD&D stuff. That was just part of our peer culture- so to me, it was just movies, entertainment & games. Only when I got older did I discover that it was an outsiders misfit genre that a lot of people want no part of, so they poke fun at those who do. My adopted dad who raised me was a hardcore murder, crime & procedural dude, so that was different. My actual dad that we live with is the polar opposite & digs all the good stuff.

As much as i would love dragon riders of Pern to have a cinematic / tv version the current hollyweird would butcher the source material so I’d rather keep it to my imagination than see that happen

I’ll buy that for a dollar. Good stewardship of other people’s intellectual property is non-existent. Then there’s the whiners who go on & on about how that was then & this is now, yadda yadda, and haha… dog bites own tail.

Oh, my goodness, Greg Evigan from the series B.J. & The Bear.
