The original Star Trek series focuses on the 23rd century adventures of Captain James T. Kirk and the U.S.S. Enterprise (NCC-1701), a powerful interstellar spacecraft dispatched by Earth-based Starfleet Command to explore the galaxy. Kirk commands a crew of 430 men and women aboard his starship, which can travel at speeds surpassing the speed of light. Kirk's five-year mission—and his mandate from Starfleet—is to seek out new life and new civilizations, and to boldly go where no man has gone before. |

Today is June 6th and it is the day the allies stormed the beaches of Normandy. James Doohan was one of many Canadians who were there fighting along with thousands of other allied military. He was shot 6 times and lost a finger. I’ve been watching the original Star Trek and now that I know this little bit of history, I will paying closer attention to “Scotty” when he is in a scene. I have a feeling that the director told the cameraman to not put the hand missing the finger in any close ups. This is all……now back to season one of Star Trek: The Original Series……
If you rewatch the Trouble with Tribbles there’s a scene he’s carrying a pile of the furry little guys while talking to Kirk and Spock. Look at his right hand,it looks as if his middle finger is digging into the pile but, no. That’s the missing finger.
That was one of my favorite episodes and then years later the Tribbles made another appearance. Spock hated the little creatures. My parents didn’t have a color tv back in the 1960’s so it was so cool to finally see the reruns in color! Those Tribbles were a colorful bunch indeed!
I think that’s a lot of people’s favorite episode. That and Through A Mirror Darkly are in my Top 2. Unfortunately the “retro” TV stations beat it a bit to death playing it so much. It’s like a really good song that you hear every single time you turn the radio on. After a year or so you’re just like, “Oh, come on!” lol
Anyway there’s other instances where Scotty’s missing finger is noticeable in the show—I don’t think they ever gave it a backstory, either, like they’d do nowadays—but that episode is what immediately pops into mind because they play it so much on network TV.
thanks for refreshing the episodes!
Anyone watching Strange New World now should watch “The Cage” and “ The Menagerie part 1 and 2” to get more of a picture of Captain Pike.
episodes are all out of order
In case no one noticed, in the ‘behind the scenes’ section, you can click on that, and there is a drop down that lets you choose from a lot of watch options to get videos from different actors that played in this, talking about who they played, or who they acted with. I watched several, and they were pretty good. Just wanted to mention it in case any of you old school Trekkies like me were interested in it…
Right on👍🏼
