In a post-apocalyptic world, Devi is one of the chosen few: she lives alone in a cell where her meals are provided; her link with others is via radio phone. She and one particular friend, Ari, talk every day, taking imaginary sensory walks, describing to each other the beach or a glade. Photos of Ari are by Devi’s phone. Devi has a window to the outside, and young nomads sometimes look in, bang on the window, and make fun of her. She’s safe from them. Then, one day, she and M, one of the nomads, begin what may become a friendship. Food, water, earth, and a rock change hands, then their hands touch. There’s safety inside: can Devi share her feelings with Ari? Are there alternatives? |
