But the morning the town was to be evacuated, after Thornton sent his daughter Helen to get lawyer John Sutton, someone put a bullet through his heart. Helen went to live with her guardian, “Nugget” Clark, who owned a stagecoach relay station, and all would have ended there…except that six years later, Fred escapes from prison.
