Plastic Flowers delves deep into that characteristic of the human psyche we recognize as Ignorance and Selfishness. The inability of one person to recognize the emotions of another, to take what one can and give nothing back whatever the consequence. Plastic Flowers is a simple story about such a man who seems to be contemplating his life after the loss of the only thing he ever loved, (or should that be ‘person’ he ever loved?). He walks through the cemetery, it’s a beautiful day, but he is alone. He thinks of his loneliness not for the loss of his friend but for his own loss in no longer having the companionship of the woman whom once he loved, or thought he loved. In the beginning maybe he did love her, but not by the end. He just took her for granted and used her to satisfy his own selfish needs without a care in the world for her needs. As long as she was there for him when he beckoned, that was enough for him. There comes the point at which she, his lover, cannot take the emotionless rejection of her existence by him and decides to end this relationship in her own defiant way. The story ends with his contempt and ignorance of such a delicate moment, it’s as if he doesn’t understand human dignity at all. All I ever wished for. Was to love and be loved. When she entered my life. Young and beautiful. Love came too. Day after day. I couldn’t wait. To be with her again. As time went by. Something changed. I became jealous and possessive. Controlling. I would only see her as an object. For my pleasure. As my toy. But where was her pleasure? I didn’t think of that. Maybe now I will. Now that she’s gone. |
