In the fall of 2013, the Marist High School wrestling team began their season ranked on top. For the first time in team history, expectations were set for Marist wrestling to win a team state championships. Yet for five seniors; Matt Sears, Josh Pruitt, Ethan Benoit, Josh Hickey, and Tom Howell their final season began with anything but excitement. Battling injuries, fatigue, and emotional stress, doubts of their potential came through multiple tests. Led by Marist wrestling alum, head coach Brendan Heffernan takes the loses in stride and works to keep team communication at the start of the season. For senior Matt Sears, the year is his last opportunity to qualify for the Individual state tournament in Champaign, IL. Coached by his older brother John, Matt knows that his largest battle is mental. In contrast, fellow senior Josh Pruitt is coming off a fourth place finish in the individual state tournament, but enters his final season with physical setbacks coming off two knee surgeries. As the season progresses, both seniors struggle to coral the talented wrestling team to achieve what their coaches could never do, win a team state championship. When the team is matched up against their neighborhood rival Carl Sandburg High School (the defending state champs) to determine who goes to the team state championships, Marist must set aside their differences and unify for the greater cause. At the regional tournament, the team captains Sears and Pruitt aim to repair any hesitation or doubt that has built up amongst the rest of the team. Time will tell whether this star studded team can avoid repeating their same mistakes from last season or if it is already too late. |
