Jeanette Harper is a documentary filmmaker who is making a film about mnemophrenia, a newly discovered mental condition arising from the merging of real and artificial memories. Her need to make the film is fuelled by her discovery that she herself is a mnemophrenic: treasured memories of her first love, Douglas, were artificial, created by Virtual Reality films she consumed as a young college student. Using herself as a case study, alongside other sufferers attending a support group, Jeanette hopes to raise awareness of the dangers of VR. However, she finds many experts hopeful about the condition’s benefits, and what starts as a highly personal polemic ends up showing a glimpse of how the new technology might lead to an evolution in human relationships. |
