Based upon the novel “The Good Shepherd” by C S Forester, this is the thrilling story of an Allied convoy crossing the North Atlantic in 1942 as it faces relentless attack by a German submarine wolf pack. The leader of the convoy’s destroyer screen is a US Navy commander making his first Atlantic crossing. The story focuses on his command responsibility as he fights the cold, the relentless night, the brutal sea, and his deep fatigue as he chases down the attacking submarines in the deadly game of cat and mouse. The exciting story, a thrilling ride-along with the beleaguered captain, so deeply portrays the elements of battle command that for a long period of time the book was used as a text at the US Naval Academy. |

Very good movie, action all the way thru and great story.
I give it 2 torpedos up :)
Now a new fav for us. Love Tom. Intense from the start. If you didnt like Saving Private Ryan, this isnt for you. Gpa served in WWII and I appreciate any war movie that tells a story. 5/5
Excellent!
Spectacular movie. Mr. Hanks does it again.
Edge of the seat for myself.. Love Hanks.
It’s starting to get pretty frustrating seeing the exact same about a dozen users using these comments as a staging ground for political battles that the hundreds of the rest of us users have no interest in importing to this website.
That said it’s fine for an Apple production, I think they all have a melodramatic slant and somewhat wonky lighting and sound.
Haha
Tom Hanks is the best for the war movies and this movie is brilliant as the previous ones. Highly recommend this movie.
Edge of the seat from start to finish. Knowing that my father was a noncom on one of these troop ships makes me glad I was born at the end of ww2
This show America fight for one cause, not each other. Great Movie
I am an avid WWII movie fan and have watched many over the years. I do believe this movie is more realistic than any WWII movie made prior to the 21st century! Very intense to say the least and at times hard to watch. U-Boats were the bane of the Atlantic and many merchant Marines were lost to them. It was so crucial that an enigma machine be taken off of a sub to help combat the U-Boats.
that wasnt really the problem .. the machine was invented in 1923 and freely commercially available for keeping industrial secrets .. capturing code books for the code of the day would have been more useful, but wouldnt last more than the expected length of a sub’s mission .. the real trick was the british invention of electronic computers, that could decode the signal fast enuf for the info to be useful .. but even then if they had taken too much advantage of the ability to listen in, they would have made it obvious the ratzi comms were broken, and the ratzis would have found some other way to encrypt comms .. so in many cases they had no choice but to let the subs have their way, to keep thier cards close to thier chest as it were .. the story that capturing an enigma machine was critical, was pushed for a very long time because the real code breaking methods were under the official secrets act for 50 years after the war
to safeguard the secrecy and not nfofrm gemany of our knowledge of their orders
The city of coventry was sacrificed
Bletchley passed on the knowledge cov wuld be bombed but it wasnt acted on
https://www.primewire.li/movie/338357-watch-u571 . Edit . wow these comments went deeper than the subs . i like to add that the movie -Spies in Disguise- argue that #Glitter# is a very effective wepon aginst Any Aggresive behavior . just saying
Based on the USNavy capture of their Enigma machine off of U505 on June 4th, 1944.
You prob don’t remember talking to me like a lunatic in a previous post and flaming me in chat. Now your talking to me like I’m one of your glitter fiends, this is disconcerting to me. But, I was informed that I face consequences for my previous comment so I’m removing it.
Thank you, I appreciate that. That is very healthy, for both of us, the cute stuff felt manipulative and freaks me out. I’m sorry if my comment felt like a personal attack.
O’kay, now that feels incredibly passive aggressive.
I don’t get the arguing over that BS. After watching the movie, has nothing to do with capturing an Enigma machine(disappointing). Based on the USNavy’s entrance into WWII in 1942, very good movie though. U571 isn’t completely fake, but, it was a conglomeration of all U-boat captures and seizure of code machines and books by both British and American forces using artistic licence.
I saw this movie when it first came out and I had never heard of the enigma machine. Just as I had never heard of code talkers until a few years before the movie Windtalkers was made. As far as I know, that has been the only movie made about the code talkers. I hope that Hollywood would make a better movie about the code talkers. They were an important part of the Pacific campaign. I do think all of the code talkers have now passed away. How sad that their stories have not been told in a proper manner.
Do you mean the movie Windtalkers? I do not recall any film titled ‘’Codetalkers’’. I agree though, there should be more movies made to tell their stories! It is not surprising however, since Native Americans are largely overlooked and one of the truest victims of racism in this country…. they certainly were the first. Such a shame!!
For example: Look at what the Olympic Committee did to Jim Thorpe in 1912 ~ stripping him of his gold medals because he had played baseball for the Rocky Mount Railroaders 2 years prior. Which was something that almost every single one of the white Olympic gold medal winners had also done (played for a team). But because Jim was Native American & an honest man, they stripped him of his achievement!
Even though he was lauded as the greatest athlete of the 20th Century!
In my opinion,u541 is much better.
It’s U571, and yeah right. Uncle Sam rewriting history again. Yahoo, etc.
For what it’s worth … years later the co-writer apologized profusely for his participation in U-571 and acknowledged rewriting history was a shameful thing to do and said that he should have known better, given that both his grandfathers had served in WW2.
… for what it’s worth.
agree
YEA!
Same. Unfortunately I know too much about him. So do a majority of others, which is why he’s removed commenting from his instagram. Look up Sarah Ruth Ashcraft.
And now he’s ran off to Greece to escape his inevitable fate.
You’re joking, right? You don’t believe every conspiracy theory and crackpot accusation that comes along do you? …Or do you?
great job :)
LOVE it! Your comment made me realize its uploaded! Thanks! ;)
Now I’m going to get in trouble… she will think I was at the stripjoint… again ;)
Not quite up to par with Saving Private Ryan but still a great movie. Story well told with plenty of action.
Very good.
pretty good stuff, wish it had ben longer! with some more action!!
Nicely pinging achromatic paradigm.
The movie is good, worth a watch…now for the love of god none of these asinine comments are anything but stupid, retarded, political vitriol and have nothing to do with the actual movie…can the mods please do their damn jobs!? Good lord guys! the comments are for commenting on the content and quality of a movie not your political biases! I’m really disgusted at seeing the comments turn into alt-left rants! If it isn’t about the ACTUAL content or quality of the movie DELETE IT as it’s AGAINST THE RULES! jesus we need new mods, current ones don’t do shit!
delayed to July 10th
OMG, face Palm Kingas bald and quite insecure about it.
even if i was bald, I regard haircuts as an opportunity to be absurd .. wherever that haircut happens to be
nice reply. Was waiting for one so I could add, “just Joshing” to my comment, lol.
thanks for the update.
Yes, thank you for the update! I love WWII movies and looking forward to seeing if this movie tells us something new concerning WWII. I remember how surprised I was when watching The Great Raid, I knew nothing about the 500 GI’s imprisoned for 3 years.
Did anyone else notice the nod to Epstein at the 24 min mark?
This was absolutely great!!! Definitely disappointing that it just ends tho Lol seems like it was half way through the story and then that’s it, it’s over. That was different Lol other than that it’s a great!!!
America is now taking credit for winning the war in the Atlantic? LMFAO. People need to read a history book.
Seemed like 30 minutes long, it would make a great series.
I would like to know how well this movie goes down in Germany. Won’t be breaking any box office records methinks.
I wonder if Toms fur topped jacket was standard issue?I like it..
Try Googling “USN Deck Jacket WW2”
pretty good stuff, wish it had ben longer! with some more action!!

Excellent! Tom Hanks does it again with both his screenwriting and acting roles. Can you imagine being a kid on your first mission at sea and having a Wolf Pack hunting you down? You could see the fear in those young boys’ eyes. All those young actors did a great job. Stephen Graham as well. I can’t wait for Tom’s next movie.
Btw, why is there always one d**khead that has to bring up sht that has nothing to do with the movie and as a result turn the thread into a conspiracy theory laden sht show? Fkn troublemakers.
I always enjoy movies at sea, and especially movies including submarines. And this was a critical time in the war. Had things gone a little differently, we could all be goose stepping. Hanks is excellent as usual…though I admit that I am a little curious about the movies he has chosen to do. Many have been about the war, or the war has figured prominently in them. Others explored religious ideas, like “The Da Vinci Code. Hanks is a hard core Liberal, and this seems out of sorts for his choice of films, as Liberals oppose war with a pasion, and disdain Religion. Hanks embraces both, and yet remains a Hollywood favorite, though he is personally a highly religious man, with an interest in warfare. It seems an oddity. Kudos to Hanks for managing to thread the needle of acceptance. A good movie to add to a collection that examined the men that saved the free world. The greatest generation.
“will rottings your brain”? Ummmm what?
I stand by my statements. Maybe you should re-read them.
I didn’t create the data. Pew did. Anyone here can read it.
Irony:any political poll on Pew you would call liberal media lies.
What do you call them?
Strange how it quickly became about me eh mate?
NO ONE likes an unnecessary war…save perhaps some politicians, and munitions suppliers. Certainly not those going to die, or their parents.I did not say that Hanks LIKES war. I said that he seems to be fascinated with it. 45% of Liberals believe in God. That means the majority do not. I did not say ALL Liberals. I just said Liberals. Pew agrees. Do Liberals HERE believe in God?
You seeem to have the wrong opinion of Conservatives. I don’t know of anyone that thinks conservatives favor war. Do you have a reference for that? As for the 45 %…google it yourself. Go to ANY information site. No cherry-picking. It’s just facts. Find a better percentage at any site. Judging by comments that are on every site, 45% seems high. I would have been FAR more accurate, had I said Liberals disdain Christianity, rather than God. My mistake.
Are you literally building that wall to keep brown people out while you post about how others are not close to God? Loaves and fishes for everyone….as long as you are a American white male conservative? Seriously friend…..consider the irony.
Irony is releasing illegal aliens that have been convicted of crimes, then having them kill Americans. Kate Steinle, for example. You do not have to task me with a Liberal’s view of God. They make it clear with their votes, and policies. Ask any of them here. God said that those that do not work should not eat.
A liberals view of God? lol. So anyone who disagrees with you is an American “liberal”? To be “Christian” is to be ‘Christ-like’ and accepting of all God’s creatures ….or is that just ‘liberal lies’? Sourcing Jodey Arrington an American Texan (yee haw)who perverted Thessalonians to suit political agenda is nothing but mental.
“ to suit political agenda is nothing but mental”… I’m justified in my reasoning. You seem to enjoy calling people names. God didn’t “accept” all creatures. He stated that he hated Esau while he was still in the womb. ou can find someone else to attack. Or don’t attack anyone. BE a Christian, by YOUR definition.
Cool. Those kids, elderly and sick can get pretty expensive.
45% of liberals believe in God? haha!! Love to see a source on that statistic! You just made a total fool out of yourself
Sprinkles Glitter on JadeEnigma: Thank Pew, Warrior! (please don’t revoke my glitter card for that awful pun…just couldn’t resist!)
side note, I gotta learn markup!
After seein this again I’m gonna go see “Sully” too ( Can’t get enuff o Sir Hanks)
Another film that will become a Hanks classic.
So many lives lost. Somehow this movie does show some of the stress and terrifying moments that these men went through, I cannot fathom that intensity of losing my life at any moment. My great-grandfather and great-uncle were US Navy during WWII. My great grandfather was at the storming of Normandy Beach, he would talk about the amphibians. I was so proud to be his granddaughter. They didn’t talk about the war much though. I was a Navy wife for seven years, married to a bubblehead. He was in the Gulf War, always concerned for any member of the US military. It was a great movie, seat of the pants type drama, glad that I watched it.
I almost lost it when he asked the crewman his name and he said “Epstein”, how ironic. lmfao.
Google Tom Hanks and Epstein.
Conspiracy to people who want to keep their eyes closed to that truth. We’ll see if/when Maxwell talks. But the look on Hanks face when Gervais mentioned Epstein was priceless and spoke volume. I suggest you watch the doc, “out of shadows”, it may help you understand what really goes on with Hollywood and celebrities. You have a great day Jade.
I’m actually curious what your thoughts are on your Commander In Chief and Epstein. Based on some of your prior statments you don’t seem to think it will affect him the same as it may Hollywood and celebrities. Not trying to throw pot-shots and nave this devolve into a pissing contest(that’s why I’ve marked it as a sp[oiler, as to hide it)I really am interested in your thoughts on this.
well I have seen the pictures of Trump with Epstein and even how buddy buddy they look together. But in that hobnobbing lifestyle that’s what they do especially when paps are around. As far as other things, I have read that when Trump heard of the allegations against Epstein he banned him from mar a lago and at some point said he should be investigated, also, if the leaked flight log is real, Trumps name is not on it. So with that it makes me lean to the side that Trump has nothing to do with this fiasco and is not involved in any illegal way. That’s my thought on it. If I’m wrong, then I eat crow. Have a good one.
Love the movie. Too bad they made Germans look like dicks when they were no different. I thought maybe he would have demanded a moment of respect for the lives of the 1st sub crew lost instead of loud cheering seeing they too were sailors, would of been decent to see that I think.
Eitherway, a great flick with action from beginning to end with great battle scenes. In my top 10 faves for war……
haha..um…no….
Sounds like your a Nazi sympathizer….Are you?
There’s lots of easy ways to connect your downloading device to your TV for free or cheap, so you don’t have the same problem in the future. Google.
I was a fan of Tom’s, but after watching the 2020 golden globes, and seeing the fear and shame he showed, not anymore. Ricky Gervais exposed them all for what they really are. From Epstein to Weinstein, to you have no right to say anything to anyone about anything, none of you live in the real world. Tom Hanks looking like a deer caught in the headlights says it all, guilt, shame and fear. I have lost all respect for him and many others. So watch your little show, say if it was good or not, but don’t praise a piece of shit that helped enable monsters and is case in point a monster themselves for doing so. He looked much more guilty then just being an enabler, he looked more like a willing participant, and I am very good judge at reading people. For many years I have suffered with social anxiety, but it turns out its not anxiety at all, I am empathic, all the feelings that overwhelm me when I am around people are not my own, they are everyone elses, and the feeling I got from watching him squirm was obvious, he is a piece of shit and guilty as fuck.
Ok tiger. Now go and play with other kids. :)
I think people are reading waaaay too much into this Golden Globes thing.
Maybe he just thought that Gervais tirade was not appropriate to an event of this kind. Personally I loved it but I can understand that someone who has nothing to feel guilty about would think it rude to invite a bunch of people to an event and then proceed to tell them they’re assholes to their faces.
Tom Hanks is a great actor , with a Peter Pan lack of aging. But at 64 should he be in a part that would have been 40ish. Could they find a suitable aged actor. Write the screenplay - take the lead
The funny thing about someone being ageist is that that person will someday be old enough to have someone be ageist right back at them
I’m 66
he seems able enuf to be in command of a ship .. why do you think hes too old?
Because he is 64 years old- when the character should be between 30 and 45
was 45 a maximum ww2 age for yank ships captains?
it could well be , but his pre war service - in the book was slow.
the point is you have a 64 y.o. actor playing a character who is 20 years younger, if not more.
eh i dont really mind, many things in this film have been a bit warped for storytelling purposes .. like ww2 guys didnt say Sonar they said ASDIC .. but if you said that today the audience wouldnt know wtf you were on about .. also, you cant direction find ratzi sub transmissions, they are compressed into a half second burst that would be hard to distinguish from a lightning “pop”, and radio signal direction finding takes time, at least 10 seconds on a good day .. again, storytelling .. so Hanks is meant to be like a father figure to the other sailors, his age doesnt count against this. You can always pretend the character is 45 if you want. If youre interested in facts not stories might I recommend Mark Feltons youtube channel hes really hardcore for the details
