Tokyo is a celebrated and vibrant city with an enormous capacity for the bizarre. Japanese society is famously conservative and upholds conforming to the status quo as the most important of cultural values. The film, Paint Your Teeth - Stories from the Tokyo Underground, is where these two collide. Paint Your Teeth itself is a live event held regularly in Tokyo. Paint Your Teeth founder and organiser, David Hoenigman, introduces us to his vision of a modern avant-garde movement following in the footsteps of his heroes of The Factory in New York. Beautifully shot interviews tell the story through the participants words while the excellent, quirky and often bizarre performances have been captured on Hoenigman’s handy cam giving the film a grungy, realist style. |
